What kind off power do people achive at the wheels (kw) from a standard or worked holden 5L in a manaul GQ patrol on 31" tyres.
Any figures from similar setups would be great.
Cheers
I did a 5lt VN EFI motor a while back, reasonable crow cam, good extractors and pipes, tuned etc managed a whole 165rwkw, they need some serious work to turn good numbers, that was on 27 inch tyres.
A stock Gen3 out of the box with tune extractors and pipes will make 240-245rwkw and you can buy complete motors for $1500.
i have no idea what mine puts out..... it has a 185kw HSV chip in it (VP 5.0 litre) but on 38" tyres with 3.9 diffs..... it wouldn't be a huge amount even with a high flow filter and exhaust.
There is no "I" in Team, but there are 5 in Individual Brilliance

Where can u get a gen 3 for $1500?
that would have to be $3,500 surely!! you are looking at 2 grand for a 5 litre...... i was quoted about 4 grand for a genIII when i was doing the research for my engine swap. Most wreckers wanted 2 and a half for an engine (5 litre)..... i got mine for $1,800 off ebay.

Thats because your looking in all the wrong places.
Ls1.com.au is your best friend, ebay can show cheapies. You can buy a complete VT write off for 3-4k with GEN3 then sell of the rest and still be better off.

A sh*#t load less than a turbo petrol
I YOUR DREAMS
Ah no not in his dreams, very correct. Do some research you're going to get a big shock I think.

165rwkw is not to bad for slight mods.
My engine has got 11.1 comp, cleaned up heads, flat top race piston, 1.65 y/t roller rockers, crane 286 cam dialed in for more torqre than hp,fully balance, y/t lighten fly wheel, port match intake, 90mm throttle body, extractors, open 3.5"exhaust, single turbo muffler and will be tune in real time by chiptorqre.
Hoping for 180rwkw+ on 31" tyres

180 hp maybe
Yeah maybe. just keep telling your self that. And we WILL see
I navi in a comp truck thats runnin a 5ltr V8. It does pretty good, not bad torque and good value for $ when you consider whats involved in the conversion. But personally I would go an LS1 over the 5ltr even given the extra $$, theres a big power difference.

Why so much compression on a relatively small hydraulic.
With that comp. should run a solid stick
want high torqre down low, bigger solid stick will produce power to start later in rev range and will have to rev it hard 7000grand + plus hyrd is maintance free.

Finally got My Patrol finished and tuned. 230rwhp@ 4800rpm. Goes very hard. Awesome midrange torque. But now i have clutch problems, just smokes it's when i hit 3rd.
Anybody know a strong clutch that bolts to the holden flywheel. The clamping pressure I have at the moment is 2800pounds Something between 3800 and 4200pounds would be nice
IM hoping for around 160rwkw for my motor, im using the vt series 1 5.0 with roller rocker cam etc. Do you think its worth going a larger throtle body on a motor with say, cam head port and polish, port match intake and exhuast, hi flow exhuast work and real time dyno chip tune?
The biggest issue with the old Holden is the little 65mm throttle body and inlet manifold entrance, JHP have Starr performance manifolds and 90 mm throttle bodies. I tune these real time and have seen 5.0L with a Crane 286 go from 155 to 180 rwkw and a 355 stroker go from 175 to 210 with a similar size camshaft through the manifold change. When tuning these it is easy to see the restriction as manifold vacuum builds at wide open throttle fram about 4000 rpm.

Where is JHP and do they have a web site, i have just finished my conversion to the 5ltr, and am looking for a upgraded mainifold and throttle body.....
Cheeres Skippy
88 GQ SWB 5''SUS LIFT 60MM BODY LIFT, FRONT LOKKA, NOW WITH 304, ...... :D
They do, I havent had to find it for a while, they used to be made by Starr Performance before he went under, do a search on Starr Holden Manifold.

I choped off the standard 65mm t/b and welded on a plate to accept a nissan Q45t/b (90mm) Didn't do before and after tests but it has very little vacum at WOT. Starr manifolds are (don't quote me) $1,450 (change over),if you ask me, for the money its not worth it. I did my set up for $300 with the same result in my opinion.
If I had the money would use a single plan manifold with a efi 1000cfm t/b. Very good for low down power, and beter than the standard maifold up top if you want to rev the shit out of it'. That set up is about $1400 with good results
