I'm converting my car to straight gas and when heading in the bush or up the beach i don't want to run out of gas and i was woundering is there any such thing or any way i can carry spare LPG?

Not sure about legalities, but i'm contemplating a similar move in the near future. Have thought about a couple of options, but i reckon the most do-able would be 2 scuba-type tanks and a main tank. Have main tank fitted permanently and scuba tank (about 50l i think) accessable with a shut off valve and unboltable. The other scuba tank can be spare, and you just replace the two when one's empty.
This idea is still in it's early stages of development, someone else might have a better idea. Keep us informed on how you get on with it.

In the early days of LPG I had a sole lpg car and I carried a BBQ bottle around as a "jerrycan".
I had a hose from the BBQ bottle that simply got stuffed down the aircleaner trumpet, the BBQ bottle sat (seatbelted in ) the passengers seat and as you drove along you regulated the LPG by opening / closing the tap on the BBQ bottle in responce to the throttle position

That was back in the days when you could get away with mounting an LPG ( household type ) to the roofrack of ya car !
These days I use a forklift bottle, the bottle can be re-filled at any servo without question so there's a major plus for starters.
By using the supply line from the forklift bottle and connecting it to the main LPG feed line as a permant fixture & through a hydrostatic valve ( one way valve setup you have when you run multiple tanks.... legal requirement by the way ) the forklift supply line can be simply screwed on when required to the forklift cylinder, the tap then turned on and bingo away ya go.
Forklift bottles carry around the 38lit mark of usable LPG, more than enough to get ya home so to speak.
Carrying em is a simple cradle setup that you see on 99% of forklifts and can actually be purchased at the same time you buy the cylinder.
Mounting them for use will require the cylinder to be in a horiziontal position, but for general transporting they can easily be stowed in an upright position untill needed.
A wrecker of forklifts usually charges around the $150 mark for a 2nd hand cylinder and supply line, the hydrostatic valve will set you back a minimum of $80........ I've seen em for over the $140 mark tho.
The other alternative is to 'custom make' a petrol tank in such a way that it can be fitted into a small space under the rig.......
My main rig has 2 LPG tanks, the first being a 92lits ( useable ) and this is my 'main tank', it is located where the original petrol tank was well towards the rear diff.
The secound tank is located beside the transfercase and rear driveshaft, this tank has 38lits of useable LPG and is similar to a forklift bottle in size, this tank is my reserve tank.
The final tank is one I made from 1.6 sheet metal and it fits between the rear main LPG tank and the drawbar / bumper, the original filler is utilised as are the actual petrol lines / pump / and guage.
This tank holds exactly 38.6 lits of petrol and is my "oh shite this is gunna be close" tank.
This is all fitted up under a SWB MQ Patrol

thats OVERALL DEMENSIONS...... includes bottom stand ring and top safety guard.
The genuine forklift supply hose is a 'dry break' setup so it can be left unconnected when the forklift tank is not being used or even in the vehicle.

I just measured under my car roughly just then and 310mm will stick out a fair bit under a SWB maverick... maybe it might get tucked up a bit better but it does hand down a little bit and then were it gets closer to the front of my car it the gap gets smalller ..
Do you have any pics of the tank under there and maybe even some mesurements in the pics LOL

Well i'm going to bring this old thread back up becuase now i'm on straight gas i get roughly 360mks out of my 90 uasable tank in the rear and i'm looking at fitting another second tank under the drivers side were my 40L fuel tank is that i'm removing.
I'm thinking maybe a forklift bottle is the way to go so i have a bit of extra range
Does anyone know if there is a servo near Land Crusier Mountin Park to fill up on LPG?

It is not legal to fill a gas bottle at a servo just because it's a fork lift bottle. Yes you may get away with it without question but it's not legal..
And before you start with the replies NO a ratchet strap it NOT securely attatching a bottle.
Secondly there is no LEGAL way you can carry/transport/fill a cylinder in a vehicle fitted with LPG unless it is permanantly attatched and approved as per the fitment of the original system.

This will not empty your BBQ bottle but it will syphon LPG from one cylinder to the other until the pressures balance. I run straight gas on my Rangie running a supercharged 253 and 2x 80L tanks. If your POS isn't fuel efficient enough to drive down your street with a fuel up then look at tuning it mate. It must be one friggin hot 253 to use that much gas. Just cos it's supercharged doesn't mean it has to use lots of fuel. 2x80l tanks is 150 useable litres. even at 25l/100ks that's 600 k's. They way you're talking it's using 50l/100km's.. That's ridiculous!

I'm interested in those scuba designed tanks that hold 40L becuase they would make my range alot better!

People when using petrol get like 20L/100km so really i'm not doing to bad.
I went to the wreckers yesterday and got myself a airbox and while i was there they had like 15 different size gas tanks all different shapes and sizes so nest week i'm going to go have a at them and see what will fit etc.

Just a quick thought, i was going to put a LPG set up in my VS wagon and they use a tank that goes into where your spare wheel. It holds 60ltrs and is only 200mm deep and about 25 inches in diameter. That would fit nicly were the aux tank goes in a SWB. It might be the expensive way to go, but atleast they could set it up as a dual tank setup.
Its not cool, unless it's got boost :)
Ive got a lwb wagon , its got an 85 usable tank behind the rear diff , the same as all gas conversions and Ive put a 75 usable litre tank inside the cab just behind the rear seat in the cargo area . There are plenty of shortys with this set up aswell , talk to hottiemonster from this board his is similar. cheers shane............
