MQ patrol completed 1/2 way round aussie. :)

Post by Vanne »

Hi all, just thought id let you know that we just got back to The Alice last night, from a successfull 1/2 way round Aus trip in our Trusty MQ.

we departed on boxing day from Alice and then headed north along the Plenty Hwy to Mt Isa. then across to Townsvill, then down to the wittsundays (for a week of well earned rest for the little MQ) then down to Hervey bay (and a bit of fun on Frasers) then to Coolum and down to Surfers. Coffs next and then to Sydney (with some beach driving at Newcastle) stayed in Sydney for a week then onto Melbourne for a couple o days (also picked up some new tires there) and then onto adelaide (via great ocean road - the first bit) a little trouble in Murry Bend (blew the front unijoint on the rear drive shaft) and then onto about 200 kms north of Adelaide. From there, we drove in one straight day direct Alice. (also note, the hottest time of the year)

all in all we were away 2 days over a month and saw some awesome sights along the way, met some realy good people/ and a couple of not so good too i guess. Had lots and lots of laughs and had an unreal time.

We pretty much roughed it most of the trips xcept where we stayed in the whittsundays, andCoolum (go the hiatt regency Whahoooo!) and in sydney. Basic camp with lounge, chairs and table. Laptop for pictures/movies and 3 suitcases for the GF. ;) we slept in the back of the MQ most nights we camped. (left all the rear seats in Alice)

The MQ went flawless the whole way, cept for the uni we blew between Melbourne and Adelaide. An awesome trip. and id highly recommend anyone else taking it on.

My little MQ had 348K on the clock before we left and have now got pretty close to 357. Its been a pleasure to drive and am very, very happy with it. (I replaced both uni's on the rear drive shaft on the way), but sides that, no troubles at all. We used about 1.5 litres of oil the whole 9K and got bogged quite a few times. Luckily we had a hand winch. :)

at any rate, its been awesome and now just have to plan the next trip we do. Any ideas would be much appreciated, though this time maybe a little less driving, and more off roading.

:D My GF has now started calling the MQ the beast

I have a Y60 here in Scotland. I was going to get a Rover for serious offroad use and still keep Td42 for longer touring trips. I`m now considering getting an Mk /MQ 3.3 for this purpose as it`s heaps better than a series Rover and they go for next to nothing.

They usually have rust issues but nothing that a plasma cutter and welder wont sort. I`ll have to have a study of them.
