Just my 2c

I think this is a great initiative by Dave. However....

PTO's have disadvantages and advantages over electric. personally i love 'em, but i can see how they might be a total disadvantage in a winch comp. I run a bog stock PTO, and cost wise it is on par with electric. If you can take the time to draw up a set of rules for electric, then take the time to do the same for PTO. It's pretty simple to see what's been done to them, and to be frank there's not a lot you can do internally. These have been around a lot longer than electric winches and are a legitimate 4x4 accessory.

I would love to compete in something like this, even if i knowingly forfeited any placing i got. Just to have a bit of fun and pit myself and my car against a set of obstacles that others are doing in a measured environment. While my car is totally road legal (mod plated) i realise that it won't be eligible and probably not fair for the near stockers in this case. (due to aftermarket arms as part of coil swap - still road legal)

Having said that, since i want to protect my daily driver as much as myself, i have gone the way of an exo connected to 4 point rollover on the tray. Since this doesn't meet the requirements for XWC/CAMS internal cages that bars me from Daves (and most other) comps.

Even if i did meet those regs, it's a pretty daunting thing to take what is effectively a medium modified daily driver / weekend play vehicle up against dedicated comp trucks that really push the boundaries of what are supposed to be road legal vehicles. You can go on all you like about how nice the atmosphere is, but at the end of the day it's still not nice to know you ain't got a hope.

So for those of us stuck in no mans land, perhaps a different class could be good. A la tough tracks trophy and challenge class.

sorry, meant to say CCDA, and at any rate someone just pointed out to me that Dave may or may not allow exo's anyway. Not sure, but i'm happy to be wrong, one less hurdle :D

I am with you Rockcrawler I love my stock factory fitted PTO winch and don't want and can't afford to spend $ on something that work well . I have a 4 point cage and diff locks and apart from the harness would need to spend a lot of $ to enter. It is a shame but it looks like I can only watch or hope that Dave changes his mind.

winch motors

Post by thegrantmob »

Have 24V MQ, with a 12v winch. 24v winch motors are hard to come by. I know there is a speed advantage running 24v through 12V winch motors but isnt that counted by reliability issues and the fact I will be competing against younger turboed Coil sprung vehicles. Seeing as people can not mod their vehicles to 24v, and only old patrols are 24v, would you consider droping the requirement for 24v motors. :?:

If your having trouble getting a 24V motor Im sure Dave or myself can help you out with a good price on a 24V one.......
"IF" Dave drops that rule , Im going out to by a SWB saffari 24v and through on a 12V :D
But cant see that rule being dropped.

does the cage have to be internal??? is anyone running Landrover defenders (cab chassis)with internal cages??? i couldnt see how one could be fitted inside

sounds like a good class, but rules me out. i have stock axle ratios, but lower low range, and a pto/hyd winch. on a totally road legal rig.

i think crawler gears may be more popular than you think. especially on road going rigs, as when on stock tyres it allows stock hi-range. but you get the good low range for off road....

on another note, i though adjustable panhard rods were illegal and not so safe as they allow it to be adjusted out of parrallel?

i have a swb safari 24v (with 24v winch) that would be eligable to compete, ive been wanting to start competing but haven't had the opportunity to enter an entry level event like this. i think it is just the thing i could do comfortably.
the only thing i dont have is a cage and harness.

where do i start looking for shops that can supply and install a cage and harness that will be qld dot approved? (and window nets)

also given its a shorty do i still need a cargo barrier behind the driver/passenger front seats?

Just a bit of info for you all,

I Have an 80 series dual-cab many of you would have seen it around b4 at the XWC, QWC,
I have to tell you that it is not all about the big dollars although it help's alot!
I started racing my rig as a wagon a slowly cut the dent's away, all that i have done is twin arb lockers, roll cage and a cutom bullbar for a better aproach angle, not a lot of dollar's at all.
I then had to progress to some treated c.v. joint's as the 80 series ones were a bit soft for my driving style(FLATOUT).
My winch is factory off the shelf Warn high mount and is as old as the hill's, so we jammed a 6hp motor on it and left it 12v, and she goes pretty good for a stocko.
I have a 4" lift and a set of 35" claws.
It was a very affordable car to set up and competes very well.

So don't be scared of racing the big-boy's cause lot's of dollar's isn't alway's the answer.

Cheer's Lepar.

i agree with lepar, it doesnt matter how much money you spend on a vehicle if you dont drive smartly at the winch comp events!! sure horsepower does help and everyone wants more of it, but if you dont approach the hills and courses in a smart manner then its quite easy to come unstuck, look at russell mason who won the rocky round of daves event at seeonee park, he was only running a lightly modified vehicle compared to the big dollar rigs and he took it out because of driving ability and consistency, Anyhows look out for a team of zooks at these events next year we are going to flood the events with them,

Hi, re canopy, that will be OK.

I may sound a bit strange, but what the hell are "spool lockers"??????

When you explain what they are I will give you an answer.

spool

Post by stock 4runner »

spool locker = solid locked diff centre replaces your original centre and can not be released at all they have the same affect as a welded diff but are a machined part most commenly used in drag racing. mini spool= replaces the spider gears with a solid machined and splined block and locks the diff solid once again neither can be releised once fitted

Now that you have explained what they are the answer is:-

NO - not legal on road

Welded/CIG diffs:-

Refer to above answer, and it is still NO (sorry Festa)

Cheers and have a nice weekend anyway.

Standard Class

Post by XTREME MMM »

:D :D :D

First Round will be held in the Warrick area. I am hoping to secure the use of land around Budaberg for a possible Round later in the year.

Just some updates:-
Turbo's fitted to diesels must be off the shelf turbo's running a full cast manifold.
Intake manifolds to remain standard.

Tyre size will be a max of 33" for any vehicle that had a model running 750 x 16 wheels etc Patrols and Cruisers. All others can use tyres 15mm bigger then the largest tyre option for that type of vehicle. This means that a Suzuki or a Hilux cannot run 33" tyres.

I will release allowed tyre sizes in the near future.

Rollcages:-
As it becomes to hard to have a mine spec cage in a ute and to make it fair on everyone. You now require a full internal cage starting at the "A" Pillar. The cage will be built to a minumum of XWC specs (available at www.xtreme4x4sport.com.au ) Afterall this for your own safety.

If you have any questions give me a call 0418 745 830 or email david@xtreme4x4sport.com.au or add to this post.

Cheers
David
