just a thought what about a ride on mowers hydrostatic gear box coupled to a bike motor forward n reverse and fully automatic
also dont lada nivas run independant all round so couldnt you pinch the cv's n steering etc off one of these throw away the diff bit and adapt a sprocket into the centre instead making for small light easily found and strong on a 500kg buggy
love the idea just wanna see one buit first then ill make one for my son to drive "ill tell hte missus that anyways"

just looked it up lada run a rigid rear my mistake
but you could easliy use there front or zook diahatsu even bigger 4bys cv's like tritons bravos etc and a datto or subaru rear
also just thought those lil supercheap boat winces for 300 bucs would happily pull a 500kg buggy hehehe

Theres smaller winches for about 129 that should be able to pull one of these things. Having said that a couple of blokes could probably do the biz...

I haven't been through the whole post, only up to page3, but why not consider using a BMW R65 etc swing arm/ shaft drive assembly, they have an axle that is only one sided, check out a BMW R65, R80 GS or equivalent. The boxer motor is one helluva a torque monster and simple to work on. It may be possible to cross drive to the second rear shaft via chain etc, but front drive could be difficult. The shaft and hub assembly is quite long enough for reasonable travel, but could easily be made longer.
Just a series of thoughts...

I was talking about the R65 and R80GS Paris-Dakar road/trail shaft drive motorcycle. Also some of their road bikes used the same rear assembly/ drive.

Read page 6.... the rules proposed wouldnt allow a 650 cc shaft drive.
No reason you cant make one, but the proposed rules wouldnt allow it.

A shaft drive engine is fine just a chain/belt conection between the motor and the wheels.....where you put it is up to you

hi all
there is a buggy class out there in the USA , stadum lites just look up
off road and find them they give you all the spec and build up of one
this might help get this class going , [ ? belt drive ]

As good as those look they do have that class in OZ.
Ours will be alot slower paced and more technical

hey all i have been toying with my design since this thread opened and have decided its great ideaand now i am thinkin if its inderpendent u want y not run a set of triton or large cv axels into a sprocket chain drive to the motor and water ballast in the tyres run a slave shaft off the bottom of the motor to run 2 seperate sprockets 1 for the front and 1 rear also using a cut down rack and pinion ..not sure as to how to make it 4ws that will come in time and i had thought 1 of those lil cheap boat winches the use may not be that great but still u never know also use a atv to achive engine size and reverse also geared lower so dont need to reduce as much chain drive would be easiest but not the cheapest as for tyhe cage i think being that its a smaller class the protrussion would be a factor as u would be driving smaller rocks i really like the idea and am keen to get building so some 1 start 1 and show the rest of us wat is the final design rule as i would start tomorrow but the rules are not finalised

i've been toying with an idea like this but i think it will be a big.
I've just got to work out a way to use a motor bike engine.
See what you think.
1l engine from front wheel drive car mid mounted side ways in custom chassis. That way you have 4wd
suzuki diffs at each end custom shafts conecting motor to diffs.
custom 3 link style suspension. i was even thinking of puting transfer cases between the motor and the diffs to get a massive crawl ratio.
I now just have to work out how to use a motor bike engine for this and i'm sweet.

Well a shaft drive motorbike engine to transfer case is easy.
Or chains front and rear and no transfer case (remember you have sprockets for reduction). Much lighter, but then you need to use swingarms or IFS/IRS.
I'd be worried about building something you can actually use first, and worrying about the set of rules second, since there is likely to be no movement in this until there's enough vehicles actually built to get critical mass.
