Are you sure 134% reduction is right .. the 4.16 was only an 83% reduction ...

Personlly depending on your wheeling habbits I would look at som diff gears and a 1 litre t\case ... I found wheel speed to be kinda important when I was up north ...

For 29s I would use a SJ-410 case or upgrade the diffs to 4.30s or 4.62s. If you plan on bigger tires in the future go with the 4.16-1 minimum.

Yes but Sidekick/tracker is vitara so these gears don't apply.

4.9 is the tallest sierra gearset trail tough offer, but it is plenty cheap.

16% in high range would correct a 30.2" on road so 29's would be fine, and give you a 66.1 crawl which with 29's and an interest in mud will also be fine. (thats assuming you have 3.7 WT diff ratios)

Ahh, I was getting the whole yankee Samuari/Sidekick thing mixed up.

Getting back drivability on road is my main concern, have been running stock gearing for way too long. I know the 1L case will bring it back pretty close to stock. Has anyone had problems with t-case gears being too low in mud?

But then again there is always high range isn't there...

having run with just a 4.16 t\case and tyre sizes between short 31's and 35's I was pretty happy with the gearing of the 4.16 ... only time it really annoyed me was in heavy clay in reverse as it was a tiny bit low with the 33's or bigger .. with 31's it was not a problem at all as you could use high range in all but the very very heaviest goop

Not really.

I'm not a great fan of mud and like lots of gearing but for high range to be usable in mud you would have to really want to hate you car or be very short geared.

Personally, I try and avoid more than about peak torque in low 2nd in deep mud so I can pull reverse and get out if it starts digging (shut up, CJ :oops: ) so I will normally be happy with some gears rather than having to abuse the clutch to make the car work.

I'd be happy with 4.9 and the nice tall high range that comes with it.

If you step up to 31's the case will still be fine too.

Thanks fellas, some good advice there. I spose it's down to the 4.16 or 4.9 then. I'm sure both will be way better than what I have now - my clutch does cop a lot of abuse, and that's just to drive down the street!

I ran series 1 gears (4.16) with 31 MTR's till i blew the gears up. Was fine for everyday driving (3.7 diffs, standard 1.3L 5 spd), but i wanted lower. Didnt want to blow the gears up mind you, but i got lower gears as a result :D.

http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/gearing.htm is a nice easy to use converter, and gave me these answers -

based on .76 overdrive, an acutal 29" tyre, it's as follows:

Stock with 26's - 3174 rpm @ 100kph
Stock with 29's - 2846 rpm@ 100kph
1 litre transfer 1.55 high - 3130 rpm @ 100kph
4.9 trail tough - 1.63 high - 3293 rpm@100kph
6.4 trail tough - 1.65 high - 3332 rpm @ 100kph

here is all the answers re what ratio is what - have fun plugging these into the converter.

Sierra Stock 1.409 2.268

Calmini 4.16: 12.2% 1.58 83.6% 4.16

Calmini 5.14: 18.3% 1.67 127% 5.15

Calmini 6.5: 20.2% 1.69 187% 6.51

Rocky Road 4.16: 12% 1.58 83% 4.16

Rocky Road 6: 24% 1.75 170% 6.12

Rocky Road 8: 24% 1.75 260% 8.16

Trail Tough 4.16: 12% 1.58 84% 4.24

Trail Tough 4.9: 16% 1.63 115% 4.88

Trail Tough 6.4: 17% 1.65 181% 6.37

Rockhopper S4: 24% 1.75 180% 6.35

Trail-Gear 6.5: 20% 1.7 187% 6.5

Actually quite a bit but I won't :D mmmmm reverse...... well at least i know I have built a pretty strong front end for the Vit and that Piggle's doors aren't indestructible :rofl: :rofl:
