Sorry, not sure if I spoke to you - spent most of my time talking to vicelore, but I would recommend 6.4's for what it's worth.

Most people who have bought 4:1's have traded up to 6's

Agreed. Im running 6.5's with 31's at the moment and its awsome out in the bush (controlled crawling) and not to bad on the road.

i've got the trail tough 4.9 gear set which gives 115% reduction in low range and 12% in low. So theoretically it should cover up to 32 inch tyres, or bring it back close to stock in high range. My mate has 6.1s (RH3?) and at 100ks his tranny is screaming along at around 4000+rpm... its crawls awesome though!

Both on and off road driving is an absolute dream. I've had no issues with the 4.9s i think are really suited to all round 4bying...they give a little more flexibility than the 4.1s.

Calmini also make a 5.14 gearset which are apparently bloody good. There are good reports going around about these and they are apparently good for up to 32inch tyres....

6.1s, 6.4s, and 6.5s are cool but the lower high ranges are designed for bigger tyres. If you drive a long way to get to wheelin' spots then think about going for the 5.14s or 4.9s...they are all a shite load better than stock so either way you'll be very happy!

But if you are getting 32s then sometime down the track you'll probably want to go bigger...everyone does! Trail Gear make a 6.5 gearset for around $499 US. Pretty much the same price as the 4.9s and cheaper than the 5.14s!

you confused yet?

Here's the gearing info post I was telling you about.

Have a look at these two companies if you want to buy direct from the US. They tend to be pretty good to deal with and if Sean at Lowrange doesn't list something just ask and he can probably get it.

I have gone with trailtough 6.4's and I am very happy wih the quality and service.

Trail tough's have the tallest high range (only a 17% reduction) so you will still be geared a bit taller than stock in high range with 32's and a trail tough 6.4 in the case.

I am on 12.50x33s. I am running 5.38s and a 4.9-1 case. Its a little low for a daily driver. I believe you should spread the reduction between the axles and t-case. This eliminates overloading the U-joints. I have only broken one in two years of rock crawling.

Crawl ratio: 96.274-1, Hi-range ratio 1.634-1, 4000 rpms=56.212 mph 5th gear with a 86-early 88 transmission which has a higher 5th gear than the newer models.

My next gearset might be a Trail Gear 6.5 and Yota axles with 5.29s. :D

haha junky sorry mate.... i was just typing as it came to mind.... Steve knows his shit.... and so does cj ... I barely know these guys but met them once on a club trip and like any web forum take the opinions and advice with a grain of salt but i've found most advice is good if it doesn't involve talking about dodgy booty fab...

i've taken a few short cuts and have suffered for it....may as well spend the $$$ up front and know its gonna work properly...

Looking at the ratio reductions the
calmini 5.14s have 18.3% in high and 127% in low
trail tough 6.4s have 17% high range and 181% low

Looking at the figures Steves advice is spot on. Pretty much same high ratio but the low range reduction on the trail toughs kick ass but also cost ~US$120 more than the Calminis. Something to consider. but the US exchange rate is the best its been for a long time too!

I bought my trail tough gears off sean at www.lowrangeoffroad.com much better customer service than trail tough and cheaper shipping. They weren't listed but i asked him and he got them in for me at a bloody good price.

You can buy them (6.5s) direct from Trail-Gear at http://trail-gear.com/zuk-tcasegears.html

If your t-case is 1990 or newer it should have the HD front shaft in it already.

I am not aware of a change and have never seen anyone break a front output even when running very old cases.

I wouldn't worry either way.

Some of the abuse we have heaped on our junk over the years would have highlighted this as a weak point if it was a cause for concern.

I have never broke one. My old 4.16-1 case has the regular one. My new case has the HD one. Trail Tough built my new 4.9-1 case. You will probably be OK using the stock one. :)

Trust me, if you break a front output shaft I will eat it. :D

I drove Mock's Critta in the first ozrock - 1.6efi, dual transfers, 39" Michelins, heavy LWB... I was breaking MQ CV's like twigs and never had any trouble with the transfer case.

I have never heard of anyone having touble with a front output even with lots of motor/tyre/abuse - A uni would go first.

I see Trail Tough have brought out 4.24:1 which give a 134% low range reduction from stock. What reduction would these gears give for high range? Too much for my little 29's?

The 4.24-1 kit is for the Vitara/Sidekick/Tracker t-case. Not a Serria/Samurai case.
