Now there are PLENTY of first hand experiences of the ZD30 grenading, but the TDV8 Dropping pistons?

Considering the sheer number of the things running around now- between mines, State fleets (I know fleet SA has about 290 of them) and the private sector, there would have to be close to 50,000 out there by now- Someone is going to have hard proof- like photos or the actual blown block sitting in their shed by now

the earlier import prado same body had coils

it probably would not be too hard to mod it from prado parts but you would need a custom rear diff housing as the prado ran a hilux center

i have a freind with the new wagon and he loves it

I was the first one to purchase a V8 ute from ferntreegully Toyota, in vic.
I bought it October 2007 and it now has 80,000 km and hasn't missed a beat. i tow a 2.5 tonne tool trailer with it just about every day and it craps on pretty much anything other than a chev or a f100 as far as towing goes.

I get around 16.2 litres per hunderd, with the trailer on running 285/65/16 MTZ, in this time a have been through two sets of tyres and now due for the third (every 40,000), and it does about a 60-40 mix of dirt roads and bitumen.

I have had no isssued with my vehivle what so ever, along with tyres i have only changed the brake pads (front and rear) twice and there now due again too, i'm only a short skip from being out of warranty then it will get the exhaust and chip and that is perely only for more economy and torque.

These utes aren't a fashion statement there built for a purpose, mine has after market in dash dvd,sat nav, reverse camera, mp3, factory front and rear lockers (shit all over air lockers) 9.5xp, 285 mtz it is the perfect setup for me, lets be realistic here there is nothing alse on the market that you can actually properly compare these to.

The oil consumption on LCOOL went somethign along the lines of

a) Toyota Denies it
b) Toyota dealers cover it up by overfilling
c) Toyota requires customer to jump through 10 hoops before they'll fix that one vehicle (not admitting a larger issue)
d) Toyota fixes that one vehicle

The fix was to do with the oil scavenger pumps in the heads, and the vacuum pump, and the seals aroudn them. Ask the owners for full details.

A VE R8 maloo will cost a hell of a lot more than a GXL 70 series ute high 60 low 70 with option pack!! so the cruiser when compared is much better value

Sounds like the old cliche of 'don't buy the first of new model'. I made this mistake when I bought a new 78 4.2 naturally aspirated model in 2000, and the gearbox gave out at 120k. Run a 78 turbo now which is excellent vehicle. Toyota will iron out the problems, which I have heard is the odd turbo blowing up, and some fuel pumps giving out when running on low sulfur or bio-diesel.
For the record I get sick of people complaining about the 'basic' interior :x and this includes the floggers that write the magazine articles. The ergonomics and visibility are excellent , and with the exception of an oil pressure gauge (which I install in mine) it has everything you need. I'll be sad to see the present dash go to make way for airbags, as it's handy for putting stuff on, eg notebooks, rifles etc
After all, it is light truck, if you want something fancy go buy a shiny hilux or navara

Hmm airbags

Is it going to be an option ?

if not and it is mandatory then all 70 series will have to have those crush sections in the bull bar mounts

probably a good idea for highway use but maybe not so good for farmers when they hit a fence post in the back paddock

Airbags??

If you're worried about the steering wheel or dash hitting you in the face in a crash, then don't crash. Simple.
2000 SR-5 turbo diesel, dual airlockers, bit of a lift, some 15x8 sunnies, 32" bighorns, a few spotties, and a wireless, and a kiddie seat in the back.

Read somewhere (4X4 Oz?) that they are going to stick airbags in 70's. I believe it is because none of the big mining companies (eg BHP) are buying them anymore due to their OH&S systems

I wonder how many lives would have actually been saved in 70 series cruisers over the years from air bags? The problem with the crash testing is they run cars into a solid wall, which sets the 'standards' and doesn't represent a lot of real life mishaps that you'd find bush. I'm happy to have airbags there, i just worry about the expense of having it 'reset' (the system) everytime knock a skippy or emu down a bit hard. Anyway, how many trucks have airbags?

(the missus' work car was hit from behind earlier this year, no damage, but car was off the road for 2 weeks while they tested and checked the airbags system because the airbag light was on and apparently may have gone off at anytime)

I'd still rather have the notebook stand...

Thats been there plan all along. Remember reading about it beofre they brought it out that after two to three yrs they would redo the dash with airbags.

Just hope they don't inlcude ABS braking.

One of the guys I work with has one with all the flash gear on it and the mufflers taken out. It sounds great and he reckons it goes like a scalded cat. One thing he was pissed off about was that he went through a drain (about 1/2 the depth of a tyre and about 1metre wide) and suddenly had all the electrical system warning lights go on and within about 10 000km from new had a stuffed alternator that was not covered by the warranty. Because the alternator and the turbo are mounted under the "V" of the engine, they are prone to water ingress sooner than they should be for this type of vehicle. Probably not an issue on a mine site, but up here in NQ can be quite a frequent occurrence.

But then most of us have seen the photo's of that dude crossing the flooded river with the boat on the back and he had water up to the bonnet. Maybe my mate was just unlucky?

All 70's back to the 40 ran a narrower rear end. You could fit 80 series hubs to the disc rear end 70 and gain 120mm but the 78/9 run narrower housings....saying that, the 105 also has wider front track by a fair bit....the Toyota engineers must do it for more of a purpose than pissing some people off...

Father in law has one and i've driven it a few times, he's had no problems with it. I hate it everytime he beats me off the line pulling a car trailer loaded in his ute against my 105 series petrol loaded as well.

If i had the moolah i'd buy one

I've heard that the turning circle is not real good either, something to do with the v8 taking up to much room. my mates got one and he cant do a uturn on a five lane road without driveing up the gutters. anyone noticed that????? (or mabe he cant drive :roll: )

Yes true. Its usually done for steering.
However not by the extreme amount that these new '76 series have. Difference = 15mm for '79 series, 95mm for '76 series; As I mentioned on the first page of this thread.

This said, I havn't driven a '76, and dont know how they really handle, but I imagine this would be noticable
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.

I have a 76 wagon. It now has 12000k's on it. Lifted with an OME kit and sits about 2 inches higher than standard. Has a 12000lb winch on an ARB bar with scrub bars down the side. factory lockers. Run 285/75-16 MTZ's

So far i have to say it is great. I prefer it to the 105 I had with all the gear but only because it tows my 1.5 ton camper everywhere with no effort. Fuel usage has been constant at about 12.1L/100 without the trailer and about 15.5 with the trailer. Of course this is all directly related to the boot at the end of my right leg, if you flog it it will drink it. Has not used any oil and i check it religously. Track width is noticable if you flog it in to a corner and then suddenly remember it's not my wifes honda, but it still hangs on, just does a little dance. Considering that I have 285's on 7" rims and 2 inches of lift i can live with it. We did a fair bit of the high country at Christmas and it handled all the hard tracks with ease. the factory lockers are great and make up for the lack of flex from the leaves (400kg rated).
It was back at toyota for a recall because of an issue with stalling on down hills. I personally never had the issue but Toyota calle it back and replaced a vacum switch. I do find the drive by wire a bit hard to get used to especially when taking off with the trailer on an up hill. I have learned to hit the idle up button and then relase the clutch as normal an the "puter" seems to prevent any stalling. Do not have to do it real often.
I'll happily keep everyone up to date if i have any issues. I use it for what it was built for and have given up on the scratches...........

our big 79 V8 fire unit at work (3650kg load!) uses around 28L/100, but thats cos most of us drive it at above 3K just to hear that V8 Bellow!

Turning circle is no worse than the TD6 79's, and better than the GU nissans!

everyone complains about the fly by wire throttle

the 79 td6 and 100 td6 had fly by wire but no complaints

so are the v8s much worse?

if so it must have more to do with the computer system and programing rather than merely the fact it is fly by wire i have a 100series td6 in my 80 and have none of these issues if anything i find it super responsive

my hdj79 is fly by wire and you cant even tell. it has a much better feel than my ba falcon which also has fly by wire.

1HZ is fly by wire.
It's a mechanical wire, but it only pokes the governor with sharp stick - does nothing to control fuel directly :)

It's all in the programming. I would think they dampen the response to mange emissions spikes on transition.
