Well the next installment in the Evolution of BOB is quickly catching up. After BOB tried becoming an environmentalist (tree hugger) I've decided to keep the same theme going with my mods. If it breaks, cut it the fark off and replace it with toobe :twisted:

This is the reuslt of BOB's tree hugging days...

I fitted that before Micka bought the Rangie off me. I found it on a rangie wreck when I bought the snorkel as well to make the fitting of it all much easier (I had to cut the air filter down a bit becaise the AFM didn't fit properly :!: ).

Ok...

So this is now where things stand.

My Toy Converted diffs now reside at the residence of def90 and my 37" Creepies have found a new home in Grafton with MQCRAZY. In their place are some 40" Comp spec Trepadors and 2 steer Mog404 axels.

The Treps:

These tyres a massively bigger than the 37" Creepies that I had and I doubt that I could have made them fit Bob without at least 6" susp lift and lengthening the wheelbase. They are incredibly soft and I can't wait to get them on the rocks.

So on Sunday I went up to Nottie Enterprises and Nottie and I removed Bob's diffs...and stood there looking at him. We were supposed to swap them under def90's Wombat, but I guess we thought that there is no time like the present. So we started on Bob.

Off came the doors. Out came the seats. The rear tailgate and windows....and then OFF CAME THE ROOF :armsup:

You can see the Mog diff just behind the steel at the back of the shed.




So the specs of what is to come are as follows:

Rover 3.5 V8 - Supercharged if I can get it cheap enough.
C4 Auto reverse gated and manualised.
LT230 with 5:1 gears.
Part-time conversion and rear disconnect on LT.
Front and rear steer 404s disc braked and pinion converted.
Hyrdo steer.
40" Comp spec Trepadors.
Cutting brakes.
Coil-overs or hybrid air/coil-overs.
And all the other stuff that every wheeler needs.

Sh!te.... looks like you might have been better off building a buggy! Not much rangie will be left at the end, going by the missing bits of body... And chances of getting it mod plated sound slim?

Getting me inspired though, looks like a fun project.... Maybe I should get off my ass and start building a spaceframe for my "project after the project after the 3 I've already got on the go".

Cut it and move it across. Will need to have a custom axle made for the short side, but will probably get both sides custom made. JBELL was kind enough to tell me how they did it on their 404s.

I know :shock:

At 7am that day it was a driveable rig. By midday that's how it looked. And the only thing we actually cut off was the roof. Everything else was unbolted or pop rivets drilled out.

I'm still going to use the front doors, bonnet, wiper guards and the little bits of front quarters, so it will still look like a Rangie. But the windscreen will most likely be lexan.

Ok...well since the cat is out of the bag...http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic197274.php...in regards to the new diffs for Bob, I may aswell put it out there for all to see.

The new diffs will be hybrids called "MogSals". We are using 4.7:1 ratio Salisbury's with the Mog outers. This will give a 10:1 reduction. Keith Kruetzer from RoverTracks is going to be making the custom inner axels that will be 1.5" 35 spline at the diff end to the 1.6" Mog end. These babies will go into the 35 spline Detroit lockers that will be in the Salisburies. These axels will be made from an as yet undetermined material - Keith is deciding which way to go - but I am VERY confident that they will be incredibly strong and every bit as good a quality as the rest of the RoverTracks products.

The reason we decided to go with the MogSals is we had to cut the front Mog up to move the pumpkin to the driver's side for the LT230. I thought about going to an Atlas instead, but in keeping it as Rover as possible, I came up with the idea to use Salisburies. This allows us to position the pumpkin in exactly the right spot and gives Bob some pretty much unbreakable diffs for less than the cost of going to an Atlas.

I will get some pics up when I have the Salisburies and see how it all comes together.

i can't realy understand why using a sals diff.

It is weaker than a mog diff.
It is so far i know bigger than a mog diff and have less clearance.
It don't comes with lockers and it is not even possible to buy after market lockers in mog quality.

Are the tubes of both axle housings same size?
Because you can order mog axles with what ever offset you want.

You must be smoking some good stuff.

Sals are strong (especially in 35 spline)
Sals are cheap
You can shave them to get plenty of clearance
There are about 10 different locker options
You do realise they are basically the same as a Dana 60 right? And pretty much all D60 bits can be swapped over.
You will save a heap of weight over the big heavy mog pinion and twin-tubed axle case.


Micka - between the portal, boxes, diffs, and t-case, you will have 50:1 reduction!!!

That is some serious low ratio!!!

Actually, Ben I will have around 33:1 between the diffs, portals and transfer. I'm not using the 5:1 gears anymore. They are being turned into 2 brand spankin new 35 spline Detroit lockers fresh from the good ole US of A ;)

And PacMan...basically what ISUZUROVER wrote is my answer to your question.

The Salisbury ring gear is 9.75". The Mog ring gear is more like 7-8". I'm using the Salisbury diff in conjunction with the Mog portals so the hybrids that I am building will be far stronger than a standard Mog. Yes the Salisbury centre section is bigger, but these will be flipped upside-down which gives more clearance.

As for the lockers.... :roll: Say a brand name and chances are they will have a locker for a Salisbury/Dana 60. I am going with Detroit lockers for the simple reason that they are strong, reliable, have no silly plastic bits that break...and I don't have to remember to turn it on.

I know that I can order custom off-set Mogs. I have had many emails with Wolfgang at KillerAxles and I did receive a good price for a set of steer diffs, but the fact remains that the pinion is about 4 football fields long and is a pain to get under my rig, in the exact spot that I want them.

Hi Micka,

sounds very good.
I dont think you need 9,75" diff after a 2:1 reduction. But it will last for ever.

Turning around the housing is a pretty good idea.
Do you turn the centers as well and end up with high pinion diffs?
Or is it possible to turn the center in the housing?
Can you shorten the housings enough that you get the orignal track width?

I cant wait to see the finished setup.

It will be an heavy lift after the extra 4" of the portals.

with the added width & back to standard (or lowered) height suspension geometry it will be low, wide & sexy! :D
