No worries mate, i stuck some more pics on there today showing the linkage i made to remotely actuate the freespool.
The winch speed does not change despite the multiple pulleys involved in routing the rope to the front. Speed is halved when doing a rear winch.
I hope it works out for ya.

Hey bloke, routing the wire through the chassis is a compromise and not the preferred option.
A year or so ago, when i was planning this setup, i also posted the question about mid mounting a winch though specifically about the routing of the rope through the chassis. Needless to say, i got virtually no helpfull replies with most saying that it's too hard and not to bother.
The thing is i remember seeing Nigels truck when Bill was building it and briefly sussing out the winch setup (but i was more interested in Bills custom portals
), the thing is, the way i remember it the rope was routed through the chassis but the pic above contradicts that.
Anyway i opted to run through the chassis from about the gearbox Xmember forward to the front of the chassis.
So far it has worked well, although i prefer to winch from the rear and therefore i've only winched forward 3 times (it's not a comp truck), but i'm always mindfull of the possible wear and tear on the chassis.
Soon i'll stick some synthetic rope on there which will sort it out.

Yeah mate, plasma rope will do the job. I was a little concerned about the way that the steel cable would damage the chassis and possibly the cable, but obviously it works.....
On a side note, how do you find the Michelin XZL's?
Are they really 36" tall? How do you find wear and also do they have a large enough footprint once aired down (they must have a few plies in them!)

The Michelins are an awesome tyre.
255/100 R16, or 9.00R16.
They actually measure 940mm which is slightly taller than my 37/12.5-16 Maxxis Creepy's.
They are the only 4X4 tyre you'll find with steel belts in the sidewalls and probably the toughest radial you'll find aswell.
For 3 years i used them as my only tyre (but i've got play tyres now) and they copped serious punishment and they did everything that was asked of them.
The compound is a bit hard to be usefull on rock (although they still done well with the pressures down), but everywhere else they are great and i'll get about 150,000km out of them easy.
They are a seriously designed and engineered tyre, for example, Michelin say they are "designed" to be used with internal and external beadlock systems aswell as anti mine inserts. They can also be run continuosly at 60kmh with 11psi.
And they work really well as you drop the pressure too, on my Patrol at 15psi the footprint would lengthen to about 200mm and at 10psi it would lengthen to 350mm plus,, it's like having tracks on each corner. Because of this and the fact that they're nice and skinny meant that they were unbeatable in the really soft dunes over here.
I run them on modified 7' steel rims with internal beadlocks

I got them from Midvale discount tyres (9274 7270) for $520 each.
Now they're asking $680 each, they went up $160 in 2 years.
Fennel tyres in Kewdale are another who do them.

if it was me i would be concerned what sort of damage the inside of a chassis rail is going to do to your rope? theres all sorts of sharp edges grit etc thats its gonna get torn up by, thats why i went the heavy option and went 70 metres of steel, dont have to worry about all the shit its gonna be slogging through under the car then...

We all know that Maxxis say their tyres are bigger than they are....
Thanks for the info, just need to shoehorn them under my daily driven Hilux......I wish.
Pretty Exy, but I suppose if you get around 150k klms out of them, especially under something fairy heavy like a patrol, my current set of 33" Claws will be lucky to see 15,000, but their pretty soft, and cost near enough to $400 a corner.

Well, they're a all position, allterrain 4x4 truck tyre with a load rating of 3750 lbs, so they're intended application is for military and commercial offroad trucks, therefore on a light (comparitivly speaking) rig like my Patrol the wear rate is impressive.
My first set i bought second hand and i still used them for 70,000kms and they are still useable.
You're welcome to borrow a set to try them out if you want.
They're commonly used on Forward controls aswell, is that what you're interested in them for?

For offroad use i'd definetly go the Swampers,, if you're mixing in a fair bit of road use then the Michelins are a bloody good option.
We're actually heading out this weekend, Meet midday Saturday at Pickering brook, we'll go and do Hellfire Pass and then camp out the back of the weir somewhere, Early start Sunday and make our way over to the Powerlines starting at Flynn rd, should be finished by about midday.

I used to be right into my Landrovers years ago, and i know alot of the Rover NUTS around Perth.

Thread deviation in a big way but are you two heading to the powerlines this Sunday (10/10/10)? I'll be up there and possibly a few others from AULRO. Will make sure to say gday if I see you guys.
