I looked at the defenders when I was getting tthe GU ute, but the while the engines go OK they don't seem to last that long.

Nissan would get my money
The rear diff is a c200 33 spline so it's not liley to give you any problems as they have been well proved in most previous navara's
Having been in one o fthe ST-R's pulling a trailer with a gq shorty in it from bendigo to melbourne like it wasnt there ..
Also hilux seats annoy the crap out of my lower back
If go faster bits are needed there are heaps of options fro the ZD30, suspension call it a draw, I reckon that the navara looks better

Navara looks way better and usual nissan reliability.
Next door neighbor has one and they're a damn good rig.
Go the blue/silver it looks great.

D130 Lr comes standard with :
Direct injection 2.5 litre 5Cyl. Turbo/intercooled 94KW, 300Nm
Constant 4x4
4 wheel discs
Traction Control
ABS
The best suspension and biggest Chassis on the market
The best tow rating
The best load CAP. ( Not counting stinking US F-Trucks!)
The toughest electronic diesel available in 2.5 litres, upgradeable to 176KW, 510Nm.
The best fuel efficiency
BIG well body/ tray.
$8000.00 cheaper than Diesel troopy,
NOT a diff/ trans breaker like Roll-uxes
etc etc etc.
I AM biased, I work on LR's for a living,and yes, I have owned/ driven lots of JAP 4Bies.
It all comes down still to YOU. If you like the car to drive, happy with its fuel efficiency and power, it does everything you want and isn't a Lada Niva, then go for it!

If you want something thats easier to work on (simpler) and tried and tested it's the current model 2.8TDI Triton.
Front end is proven (not like Tojo IFS garbage) 5sp gearbox & t/case are ex 3.5 V6 Paj (big) and the rear diff and axles are also 3.5 V6 Paj (9.5" C&P 31 spline, 33.5mm rear axles).
Pretty tough and the 2.8TDI donk has more than proven itself for longevity & reliability. It produces 92Kw and 294Nm not as powerful as the other two but mechanical injection and simpler design.

Most of the dual cabs are similar as far as off road performance goes, except the HiLux has better clearance under the sills.
It depends what you want to do with it.
If it's mainly on road with LIGHT trail work the Navara would be the go. Better on road performance and comfortable interior.
If you want to do a bit more off road then maybe the proven HiLux will be the go.
The independent front ends on all will give better on road and dirt road comfort. Tho I have had problems with bush fixes when the rubbers go on the arms as they are pressed in. (They had to be oxyed out).
When the new Navara came out I heard of a few front diffs going. One was when 4x4 Aust was testing it for ute of the year (on an easy track). My girlfriend has a HiLux and blew the front diff in that, but I put it down to driver error!
The Navara has the best engine. The HiLux engine is good but not as quick. Not sure about the new on coming out tho.
All of the dual cabs run drum brakes on the rear except the Landrover 130. For serious off road and outback touring the 130 would be a good choice. Tho bad ergonomics would almost rule it out as a daily driver.
The best option IMO is a Patrol or Landcruiser chopped into a dual cab.
BTW I have had two dual cabs and have done lots of research into all the models. Now I drive a Patrol (maybe into a dual cab years down the track

)

Im glad this thread turned into what it was supposed to be not a bunch of smart alec self-opinionated remarks from people who think they know it all
(Gets off Soapbox)
There is not much difference between the two these days, Toyota has the better fit & finish although you have to spend more money to get as many options & the Nissan has the better (stronger) running gear, the ZD30 doesnt suffer from the problems of the Patrol & thats possibly due to it pushing around less weight and no intercooler.
There are other dual cab out there with the Defender being the largest & possibly the most capable of the bunch. I personally wouldnt buy one for the drivers seating position ( my shoulder hangs out the window when it is open ) aprt from that they are a good vehicle.
What about the Triton or the Rodeo. Both are tough as old boots with overengineered components in the drivetrain. Ok they don't have the power of the other two but that can be benificial in terms of reliability.
The TD Rodeo is not far behind the other two in the power stakes & is not a bad looking truck. It is also larger with more legroom.
The 2.8 Triton has more power then the 3.0 Gutlux & is not a bad thing on the road (nearly bought one before the GQ).
You could put a turbo & intercooler on the Triton with the money saved on purchase price.
Thats my 20c worth, MERRY XMAS to all.

The new Rodeo's look good but they seem to sit very low.
Not keen on the suspension setup on the Triton.
I had 2 Bravos which served me well untill I started pushing the boundries too far and then the problems started. Tho I think that would be the same for most of them. The Bravos are looking very dated now tho.
