and what happens when u lend ur fresh v8 4wd to ur old man
is he gonna fry this engine to cause he can't look at the guages?
BOOM! more money

fix the turbo diesel if u can do it yourself and put some guages in
and put a big lockout tag on it so no other twit drives it :D

I know what you meen about the sound, there is nothing quite like the sound of hot 4x4 going sick up a big hill with lockers in & shit flying everywhere, i hear my petrol six on video & want to mute it. But other things to consider are cooling the donk & ratio's, but you said your a spanner man so you will figure it out! :)

Cost to find out what is wrong with motor - $0
Cost of a cheap fix if the problem is minor - $0-1000

Cost of V8 conversion - $4000

The $3000 difference buys A LOT of fuel. And at least if it isn't a cheap fix you can tell whoever buys the motor exactly what is wrong with it. And remember that a V8 4x4 on gas won't get anywhere near the mileage of a V8 car on gas - too much extra wind resistance and rolling resistance.


Mate, I've been in the trade for a long time, and there aint no way that it will be a cheap fix!, There is no way that I would even bother to pull it down and look at it, it's wallaby teds brother.... roo ted.

Why is it that all you guys are against petrol motors? Is there something obvious that I am missing?. I don't use it for four wheel driving at all, it is purely and simply a tow vehicle, and the 4.2 really hasn't got enough nuts to tow my drag car outfit, you hit a decent hill and you're stuffed, you can't hit 5th gear at all unless you go down hill, and these boxes are tough enough to tow in 5th. Now don't get me wrong either, I'm no Holden nut, infact I hate holden, I am Ford through and through, problem is it isn't an option to fit a cleveland so I have been told. But I know and I'm sure that all you guys know, that a properly built fuel injected 5 litre has got a SHITLOAD more balls than a 4.2 turbo deisel.

I'm a TB42 owner myself, considered a turbo LPG TB42 conversion perhaps?
You can tweak the TD42 Turbo a lot, they do tow well and cheaply, a mates Turbo intercooled TD42 keeps up with my carby 4.2 quite well kicks arse in dozer pulls even against 6.5 Chev diesel V8's, 150kw at the wheels dyno'd. He can tow in 5th but wouldn't, it's the weakest gear and GU's are know to break 5th towing.
You are right that LPG may be competative too in many areas, though availability could be an issue outback.
All in all there must be good reasons Kenworths & Macks are not petrol.

You've already answered your own question. You simply want a V8....you don't need any other explanation, other than "I just want one"!!!!

Being a mechanic, you know as well as anyone else the cost of genuine TD42 rings, pistons, bearings, crank clean up and head skim etc aint going to be cheap, even if you get them at Trade price. Add that with the difference in fuel costs, then an 8 on gas is going to be the winner!

If the world decides to shit on you for a thrid time, and you have to rebuild the 5lt, then its going to be so much cheaper than buying Ni$$an parts!!!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a turbo diesel idiot and have been involved with Turbo/Diesel GQ's that make most V8's look very stupid in the bush, and for our application that is the best setup for us.....but it may not be for you. Build your 5lt, enjoy it and don't look back!

Thank christ for that, a bit of positive feedback about my decision!. I was starting to wonder if I was actually doing the right thing or not!. I thought of an injected windsor, but the holden motors crap all over them reliability and power wise, so I will just bite the bullet and go for a Holden.

My next question is, the Marks 4wd kit seems extremely pricey, and you have to weld in the engine mounts, which seems like a whole lot of headache to me!. And they use an extension for the input shaft, sounds like a weak link..
Has anyone used the Hadfield conversion kit from the Castlemaine rod shop? It is a heap cheaper, uses the nissan clutch and has bolt in engine mounts, only prob is that the left side cylinder head hits the firewall and you need to make 45 mm clearance. That's a big whack with a hammer!

Any help or advice from someone who has experienced the conversion would be greatly appreciated..

Bazzle, any pictures of the Mav with Windsor...was it the 5.8, 5 litre or an earlier version. I think there is a difference between the EFI and the earlier carby.

hey mate, how r ya,, the cleveland is a really tight fit on the firewall, i had 2 belt back the firewall 2 clear da heads, i used a kit from dellow automotive in sydney 0297744419, it comes with belhousing,engine mounts that i keep breaking ,& a nissan clutch plate, & spickit bush, it cost me $1045 to get it down to melbourne.. u need 2 use a ford 11'' presure plate & flywheel & depends on the year of your gq u may need 2 grind some of the gearbox shaft, the nissan slave cylinder diddnt push out enough to select gears, so i used a big resivior of a tanem trailer with a ford xe top loader v8 slave cylinder, i just used standard v8 manifolds but is very tight on the firewall. with the cable i got it made up longer & 2 suit the holley carbie. for the cooling system i used EL falcon twin thermos with a 3 core radiator which keeps it cool enough, the other problem is the sump pickup nearly sits on da diff so you need 2 either reverse da pick up 2 da back or buy a bronco 4wd v8 sump & pick up, i tried to get away with da standard but i sqashed da pick up 4wding & seized da first engine,so do it straight away coz it was very costly,,, the conversion was a pain in da ass to do but they do go really well, dellow make it sound very easy but there full of shit haha, there is no fuel econamy about 150-170kms to 70ltrs but thats using a holley 750 dp,, anyway i hope its some kind of help 2 ya, sorry im not sure how 2 send pics yet will try soon & if u have more questions just send a msg or my MSN is jess351@hotmail.com,,, dont worry its well worth it heaps of power & touqe from 500- 6000rpm, wish u luck, jess

Cant comment on your specific kit but I have used Castlemaine Rod Shop before and there service was excellent. Great information and I thought reasonable pricing.
