TD42 turbo gq crapped itself, wanna fit a cleveland
TD42 turbo gq crapped itself, wanna fit a cleveland
Hi all, I am new here, hope this topic hasn't been covered b4, my 93 td42 gq with safari turbo kit cacked itself last week, it ran out of water and the person driving just kept driving it. It is a 10,000km old engine as the same person cooked it 2 years ago and I fully recoed it then. I am wondering if it is possible to throw a ford cleveland into it or not. If so, where do I buy the kit, been looking at marks, but no mention of cleveland. If it comes to it I will put a holden 308 into it, but the reason I want to put a clevo in is that I have a really strong motor in the shed that I can use.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks. Tim

Re: TD42 turbo gq crapped itself, wanna fit a cleveland
it has been done, if I remember correctly, someone here has done it, but there are better motors to work with..
your issue is that you already have it. most kits would be for Chev/Holden since its the most common mod.
what you doing with old donk?

Ok thanks for that, also, just as a point of interest, what would my old motor and complete turbo kit be worth?, it has a fully recoed head, recoed injectors and pump, new clutch, bottom end was recoed but I'd say it is stuffed now, it runs on 4 cylinders but blows a power of smoke. Turbo is in excellent condition though, and I reckon the head could just be shaved and reused too.. Anyone got any idea on what to sell it for?

PS why would any one want to fit a slower engine to a GQ than the 4.2 ?
Yes, it was actually my father driving it both times, I was going to fit a buzzer after the first time, but never got around to it, bugger!.
Basically I want to fit a more common engine because I spent $8000 the first time he stuffed it, and now it has all been pissed up against the wall. Atleast with a clevo or holden v8 they are cheaper to replace if the need arises!

Theres one in the trader section for a grand. Depends how fast you want the sale.
lowexf wrote:A Grand?, geez I would never sell it for that, the clutch and injector pump cost me that on their own. I would have thought the turbo kit would be worth that on its own?, Aren't they worth anything these days?
Theres a place in Qld selling good running TD42s for $4000.00 You gauge what you think its worth.
Dead engines with no idea what is actually fucked in them, arent worth it. You yourself said $8000 to rebuild it. The motor is basically worth phuck orl.
... your probably better flogging the turbo system on its own... been a few go thru here.
i'd keep the motor....
very strange to crack 2 motors....
who ever set it obviously didnt do a good job...
a well setup diesel will shit on a V8.....
plus you have extra problems with v8 i.e. engineers... radiator... bell housing adaptors...
i would simply get the motor rebuild have a pyro properly setup and not let your old man drive it anymore

Robbo wrote:Me i would go get a reco short motor put it back togeather, with the fuel price going like it is your pocket would be better off staying with the diesel. A V8 petrol GQ would be pretty thirsty.
The fuel prices are the reason I am thinking of going for v8 on straight lpg. I don't know about you city boys, but we are paying nearly 130 cents a litre down here in the country for deisel, as apposed to 40 odd cents a litre for lpg, you do the sums, I know what will pay for itself sooner..

Agree
The Heads keep hitting on the Fire wall, I have also looked into this and am going to go Chev, If you dont want chev then 5Lt will do the job nicely.
V8
[a well setup diesel will shit on a V8..... ]
Maybe but why do a lot of comp guys run V8's.
My opinion would be to set up an alarm on temp and low water level. It wont matter if you put a V8 in it or fix the diesel they will both get stuffed if that happens again.
My V8 runs great on gas and is cheaper to run than my 2.8TD pajero.
Antoher intresting point would be to put the diesel on gas as well. This will save a bit of dollars but still have the advantages of diesel in the bush

dont waste your time putting a cleveland in a 4WD
the distributors in the WRONG spot to begin with.
just sell the clevo and put a chev in it.
I have a complete near new tricked TH700 R4 with transfer and adapter plate attached to suit chev.
pm me if you are interested in it

Safari Turbo
G'day matey,
This is probably one of the many PM's you will recieve in regards to your safari Turbo setup. Would you like to sell it ? If so how much Cash to make you part with it complete ?
Also was it working fine when TD42 was running ? How long has it been in service ?
Cheers,
Jeremy

A speed camera would have prevented that!
TD 42 tgurbo Gq crapped itself-want to fit a cleavland
I had a cleavland in my Falcon, and they were a very strong motor. Personally I'd go Windsor as they look narrower and may be lighter( the clevo heads weigh a tonne) I got 19mpg on petrol in the falcon,
Like to see pix of any of the Townsville windsor V8 in GQ's, would feel and look right in my Mav. 5.8 on lpg would be good.

Thanks for your replys guys, I got onto a complete 145000km injected vn 5 litre today with loom ecu and whatever else I need for $1000. I am going to buy that it is a steal. I have had heaps of pms about the turbo kit, it is for sale and so is the motor. I won't take any less than $1000 for the turbo kit if anyone is keen...
Hi there.
thought i would add my experience to your question. i have built 2 fj40 V8 shortys over the last 15 years
But the last one i built approx 3years ago i installed a very good 351 clev which i had from a 81 XD Falcon.i bought a bronco sump so the pickup area cleared the front diff.
Now even though the dizzy was at the front, the dizzy had the electronic points module in it , the 40 would almost run under water. i never had any problems with it at all, which is not what i could say about my first 40 which was running a Small Block 350, every time i got near water it would start breaking down and dropping off cylinders, even though the dizzty was tucked away behind the carby.
I copped a lot of flak about putting in a ford motor and yes i had to pay extra for a bronco sump, the clev conversion was the better hassel free conversion long term than the chev was!
But the phisycal fit in a GQ may be a problem.
Cheers Grant.

Hi Lowexf
I would personally strip the 4.2 and check the damage before making any decisions, you might get away with a set of rings and a piston, polish the crank and a set of big ends, drive away for under $2G if you can do the labour yourself
This may upset all the buyers looking for a bargain, but it is the truth.

That's just it, being a mechanic and a qualifeid lpg installer, I can do everything myself, I have a complete gas system sitting in the shed ready to bolt on. And I have done a heap of v6 conversions into different types of vehicles at work, so a v8 won't be too hard to handle. If I can't get out of the whole conversion for less than 4 grand then there is something wrong.
Plus, I think it is time for a change!, I love the roar of a v8 being an avid drag racer, the patrol is my tow car, so I reckon stuff the deisel!.

then why dont you rip the head off the TD first? Could just be 2 sleeves and 2 piston/ring combos.

I agree.
Whats the point of spending all the money on a deisel shit heap that costs a packet to run?, I am far better off selling it all and putting the money towards a v8 setup on gas. I am just sick of pulling up at the bowser and paying over $100 to fill the thing up and really get bugger all out of it. As opposed to my work hack ea falcon on gas, it costs $40 to fill with gas and I get the same sort of mileage as the Patrol.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm not the richest of people, and from doing the sums, I will come out way on top by converting it..

You need to do your sums again...
Cost to find out what is wrong with motor - $0
Cost of a cheap fix if the problem is minor - $0-1000
Cost of V8 conversion - $4000
The $3000 difference buys A LOT of fuel. And at least if it isn't a cheap fix you can tell whoever buys the motor exactly what is wrong with it. And remember that a V8 4x4 on gas won't get anywhere near the mileage of a V8 car on gas - too much extra wind resistance and rolling resistance.
