No, we have a set in a car in the club here and they are quiet and do what they say on the box.

Price, warranty and a taller high range steered me towards the Trail Tough 6.4 though.

Im running s4 from BBM. I run 31's and locked front and rear and the set up is awsome for playing in rocks.

Hi all,

Im thinking of getting a set of s4's or trail tough gears for my zook, but was wondering of there are any problems with poor batches of product in the s4's like there semed to be with the s3 rockhoppers. I thought there might be a few more opinions out there now they've been out there a bit longer.

Well yes and no!! I busted my transfer housing after 2 months of running rockhopper S4 gears. This happened due to not bracing the case. The housing smashed in half, and nearly all the gears were stripped, and busted. A good thing about Low range (correct me if im wrong) but they have got a warranty on the gears. I recently got a complete transfer (6.5 - 1) from low range, delivered for around $1300. This comes with a warranty on the case, and a seperate warranty on the gears. My advice for you mlzook, is make sure you strenghten the housing and mounts!!!!!!

How did you manage that?
When I enquired Sean told me that a complete transfer was/is heavier than the maximum shipping weight (30lb's I think?)and could not be sent internationally. :?

Jeez. I got mine around 6 months ago.. im sure it was $1370.. took around 7 days to get here to, and came to the post office!!

I'm on my 3rd housing and the original stage 4 gears , luckily each time the gears survived , I have heard of failures but I think most people have damaged there gears while breaking there housings open , if you brace the housing you shouldn't have a problem , and they where selling them a lot cheaper than I paid , Cheers Paul.

I bought the Mighty kong mount for this reason, havn't installed it or the gears yet though. Do you think it'll do the trick mart?

Alright guys, this is the most relevent thread I could find in the bible so here goes.

How the bloody hell am I supposed to remove the tiny little needle bearing in the end of the output shaft to replace it? Is there some special tool required, and if so what's it called?

Also the new bearings that came with the rebuild kit all have a C clip style ring around the outside where as the originals don't. Does this matter? Should I take them off or leave them on?

spigot bearing puller.
try some local workshops ,hopefully someone will lend you 1 or pull the bearing for you.

Cant remember how I got the spigot bearing out but I took the c clips off the bearings so they matched what was already in the case.

OK well my 6.5's are in and I looooooooooooove them :D Only grumble is that it lurches forward a little in first low when I take my foot of the clutch (heavy duty clutch). I think this may just be cause the gearing is heaps lower and with a bit of practice I'll get it controlled I think. Does anyone else suffer that? Oh and does the high pitched tone/whine go away? I can live with that though lol

I have a centreforce clutch and you do get use to it, Ive got 4.8 diffs to so you go very easy letting the clutch out in 1st.
My gears still wine but I dont pay attention although the guy behind me once said over the uhf "those gears are noisey" and that was doing about 80km/h with him a few car lenghts behind.

Hahaha I doubt anyone behind could hear my gears over my exhaust lol, I can barely hear it except at some speeds and low revs. I made sure to clearance the case as much as possible as I've heard that can help with the whine, and I replaced every single bearing at the same time.
