i just want to know some what some info about running a s3 ie; highway speeds, fuel economy(31s, standard diffs)etc...
Im unsure wether i should get the s1 or go all out and get the s3.
thanks for any help.

My Brother has 5.14s on his coily and it works well with 3.9 diffs but i wouldnt use them in my car with 3.7 diffs. I wanted to go bigger tyres but wont do it now because it will get boggy on the road at 100k's. The 6.1 is perfect, but I like revs and momentum.

I had S1, and when i ran my 32's i found that it was just a bit high to keep descent performance on the street (std WT centres). I am now putting in calmini 5.14 as i smashed me s1. These seem to be a better choice for 31-32 inch tyres on the road, esp if the tyres are a heavy style (swampers etc).

running 31 MTR's atm on NT diffs
down the track I'll be getting WT then putting some pitbull rockers on it
would i have to get a new R & P or would 5.14's handle 33's by themselfs

I ordered a set of gears from LOWRANGE OFFROAD 6.5:1. 20% reduction in high and 187% reduction in low. Should suit 33's and 3.7's. NO QUESTIONS asked replacement guarantee. http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/samdrivetrain.htm
Had series 4's in my 1.0ltr, also with 31's, off road gearing was super low, the 1.3 and 5 speed would have made things more useful.sanger wrote:Im also running series 4 and havnt had a problem off and on road. Im running 31'muddies and the gearing for on road is perfect.

I have been looling at these! Would you be able to let me know what it worked out delievered to your door? PM if ya want! I run Series 3, with 31 simexs and 3.9, I still think it needs more on the highway! I think a 4.3 ratio would be perfect!
you know you want one
Bill - have you got NT centres in yours?... sneaky
If you are interested in the best balance between high and low, look at the Trail Tough 6.4:1 - it has the highest high range (only an 18% drop from memory) Also quite a good price and, apparently, a "no questions asked" warranty.
31's are about 19% taller than stock.
If you want to "correct" 31's with just a transfer, any 6:1 gearset will go pretty close as they range from 18-24% reduction.
What you can't take into account is the effect of higher rolling resistance and increased aerodynamic drag at speed from the bigger tyres.
Steve.

Oh, and weight.
Wider and more aggressive tyres take more power to push. The added weight of heavier wheels and tyres take the edge off it as well.
At the end of the day, of you gear the car exactly back to stock, it will be slower than it was when standard. One way around this is to gear a bit shorter than stock so you are carrying a few more revs than stock. Another way is to look for torque increases in the motor (but only if they apply at cruising revs)
I don't daily drive my sierra, so for me, if my car is slow and noisy I will live with it, but if refinement etc is important, then you will have to tread carefully to get decent drivability.
an obvious solution is to run the narrowest, least aggressive tyre possible in the diameter you need for correct gearing on road, and leave the wider, more aggressive tyres for trip only.
Maybe, 3.9's and a trail tough 6:1 would be sweet for road use- or a 24% reduction high range with WT gears. I guess the answer lies a bit with your expectation of what the car should drive like.
As an aside though, nobody would expect a patrol to drive like stock with 37's on it, so you can't expect a sierra to drive like stock with 31's on it.
sorry if t his doesn;t really answer your question

Inflation rate will change this figure daily but you are looking at about $1000. As soon as these go in I get 33's. Then I'll have to make a new rear bar and spare carrier!
yeah it does ... its just trying to look at what is right I'll most likly keep 31's as daily's an have 33's for playGwagensteve wrote:Oh, and weight.

was on the trail tough website ... looking at the 6.4:1 guess you where talking of those ... it says it only has a 17% high range reduction compaired to the trail gear ones which is 20% .... if i am right in my assumption the the one with the least amount of reduction in high would be the best for road driving because it wont have to rev as much to move
one thing I've thought about if i put low gears in is seeing if i could tap a line into the transfer case an connect a oil cooler to the transfer case with a pump in the line so it doesn't over heat as much - extending the life of the gears ... wacky idea

ive been wanting to get the calmini 5.14 when tax time comes around, but they seem quite a bit more dearer then the lowrange- offroad gear, it seems like you can get the 4.9's delievered for under 800 aud, when the current exchange rates, ive emailed them and will hopefully get an response soon.
i run 3.9 centres sitting on 30/31, and i drive highways alot. The lowrange bloke said 6.5 would be too low(20% highrange) and would be revving way to much. i wouldnt mind sitting on 3500rpm - 3800rpm at 100k's. the 4.9's offer a 16% reduction in high. and would make crawl ratio 66:1.
what i cant understand is why the 6.5 gears are cheaper then the 4.9's?
edit: emailed back.
Sorry for this automatic response, but will be out of the office from the 9th
through the 13th of May testing some products on the trails in Moab, Utah.
We will still be returning your e-mails and calls during this time but not as
quick as we would like so please be patient.
Have a great weekend.

will have to ask them why prices are different.

does anyone know what the highrange ratio is for the 4.9:1 tcase? when it says 20% im guessing the ratio would be 1.2:1 for highrange(going on the standard ratio of 1:1, if thats correct)
is there a way to work out how many rpm's at 100k's with 31?
im sure i could work it out, but time and effort

Stock sierra high range is about 1.4:1, so + 20% will be about 1.68:1
If you have stock diffs your cruise revs will be pretty close to stock. - about 17% for tyres or something, +20% for the case.

got a reply from lowrange dudes, was asking how much shipping was and why the 6.5's were cheaper then 4.9's.
I get them [the gears] from two different suppliers and the 6.5 gears are ordered in sets of 500 by my supplier so they are able to get them for much better prices.
All prices are quoted in US dollars.
Sean
hi sean,
can you please advise why the 6.5 gears are cheaper than the 4.9's?
was that $110 for shipping in usd?
