Another problem besides strength is finding a transaxle with low enough gearing. The more powerful the engine the higher the gearing.
It would be interesting to see someone build a buggy with a subaru drivetrain. The early MY (EA79/81??) came with a 3.9:1 transaxle, any up to an EA81/82?? turbo will bolt straight on (1.8L turbo). Or you could use a WRX engine but probably too $$$. Because it is a boxxer weight would be nice and low - Strength may still be a problem though.
WRX halfcuts including gearbox range from $2500-6000 depending on what year, STI, gearbox etc.

Better still, the SVX (flat 6 non-turbo) engines below them. You could build a very cool buggy with one of those.
