Buggy Qustion

Post by Twisted »

thinking of building a buggy, and was wondering if you are allowed to enter a single seater buggy in any of the comps here in OZ??

and if so, which ones??

have come up with a bit of a unique design plan that i really like, and just wondering if it was worth it as i want to compete when im finished it

hope you can help guys???

well its still only in design stages at the moment as im still saving up the money i need

but basically i'll use a little car like a daihatsu charade or a centra or something as a donor, something with a little lightweight east west motor in it

then i'll mount the motor where the passenger seat should normally go and run it north-south, with the drive shafts coming straight off the gear box, going to a pair of front 60 series cruiser diffs with 4wheel steer

in the end im hoping to run somewhere around a 38-42" tyre, but i dont know what the rules are with this tho

thats roughly about it anyway

Edit: Sorry guys Twisted is my mate and he just registered on my Computer. And the accidentily posted as me

Its not really that different. Trailcraft did this around 3 years ago. And there is another with a similar set up being built at the moment.

As i said it has been done before and although somewhat successfull it wasnt as impressive as i expected. There is another one that if not at the next round of W.E.Rock it will be at the finals around the corner from your place.

With this set up you dont realy need a Tcase as you allready have the reduction in the FWD diff (Usually around 4.1) but the problem here is its generaly a weak diff. And it also needs to be Locked up. So unless you can machine a locker for it your going to have to weld it which may not be strong enough.

Now the 60 series rear steer is also going to be a problem because although its going to be light its still going to bind a tyre somewhere and your going to break a CV or axle. Im not convinced a 30 spline Chromo long will cop Rear steer.

Yes but as i said the Diff centres are usually not that strong so i think you will have strength issues here.

any way

Post by tuf045 »

is there any way that the weakness could be overcome?
ie: get a spool made up instead of welding? or do you think that the gearbox overall will no stand up to the abuse?
what did the trailcraft buggie go like? what happened to it?

It went ok. There were things it could drive that i couldnt. But as soon as you needed to climb something that needed som throttle it either crawled or Broke. But this was more the Suspension set up i beleive. And it usually broke a Cv from what the builder told me. They had heaps of trouble makinmg the Diff Centre strong enough enitially but i beleive they machined a spool to overcome this. This was running a Camira Motor and auto trans. The rig is still around but the Owner has gone soft and doesnt drive it much anymore. Actually i think Dave(owner) was allways soft but Matt(builder/spotter) had more patience then :D

Will be interesting to see how Pete's transaxle set up goes with the portal axles. Its running a honda V6 and Auto i beleive so should have a heap more HP.

well i don't think that you could say a camira is a real power house espeicaly with an auto. but with out going to a turbo 4 clyinder there wouldn't be many real powerful 4 banger engine gearbox combos.
maybe a v6 magna engine and gearbox don't know what the cost would be?

There seem to be a reasonable number of buggies in Europe running this sort of setup. VW golf/polo engines and transaxles are common. Usually with portals.

Another problem besides strength is finding a transaxle with low enough gearing. The more powerful the engine the higher the gearing.

It would be interesting to see someone build a buggy with a subaru drivetrain. The early MY (EA79/81??) came with a 3.9:1 transaxle, any up to an EA81/82?? turbo will bolt straight on (1.8L turbo). Or you could use a WRX engine but probably too $$$. Because it is a boxxer weight would be nice and low - Strength may still be a problem though.

The magna Auto has strength issues in the Magna so im not sure how it would go in a Buggy.

No Problem. A Subaru SVX engine and transaxle would be cool too (flat 6 like a porsche).
