as far as I know, (I may be corrected & I hope I am if I am wrong), but the GXL with the TD came out with a stronger Box, now if this 80 was just a 1HZ, it will have the lesser box that is not built to handle a turbo for as long as the factory turbo box
was it advertised on paper or on the net as a Multi-valve TD (as you would expect a 96 GXL TD to be), if so, you have him by the swingers.
good luck..
ps, what rims & tyres are on it?
You are close Joombi. The factory TD's had different ratios and more importantly a larger clutch .. don't quote me but I think around 12 inch vs 11 inch for the non turbo.

I would of imagined also stronger internals, ie; pistons

Yeah you might be right there .. also different piston crowns too I think .. maybe to do with the direct injection vs pre combustion? But the crank etc is the same I believe which is probably why they bugger the bearings so easily ... anyway a better motor overall in my humble opinion (bearing issue aside)

the gearboxes are internally and externally identical except for first and second gear ratios, and the input shaft spline. the 1HZ clutch is 11", the turbo motors have a 12" clutch, and the factory 11" clutch certainly does not have the kahunas to stand up to turbo torque for very long. if it has an aftermarket heavy duty unit in there it will handle it ok.
then engines all share more or less identical block, crank and rods but the pistons and heads are all very different.

So what does the complience plate say ?? Is it a 1hz or factory turbo diesel with the engine swaped?? Also is it a 96 model as you were told?? If it is a factory 1hz you would have noticed that when you checked the complience plate before purchess. you did check the numbers out first did`t you. If you are suss that this guy knew it was a 1hz (ie plate or rego papers say 1hz) then Id go and pay him a visit if I was you,
