Mate, buy a DX, get one for low teens, bung an aftermarket turbo in it, and you are having a ball for round about 15K. For 30K I'd rather buy 2 x DX's.

the price is fair if the vehicle is in top condition and has full service history. Looks pretty good in the pics. Depends whether you want the luxury of power windows, carpet and cloth upholstery or if you want to build a hardcore offroader - if you are going to beat it up, Dave is right, the DX is the go. That said I love my GXL multivalve and the dependable grunt of the factory turbo is fantastic.

be aware that at 200,000km it is supposed to have injector service ($800 ish), timing belt ($200ish), and pump overhaul ($1000ish), and it's a good idea to change out the big end bearings ($300ish), you might also find that it will need new CV's and a knuckle overhaul ($1000ish) sooner rather than later, and the rear diff might well be on the way out - listen for slight whine at 70 - 90km/h ($800ish with new gears and bearings), plus anything else it might need (looks like it needs about 5" or suspension for starters)

Thanks dumbdunce for the inside info on what may need to be done... Sounds like a few extra dollars that I haven't considered yet!! I haven't actually seen the car yet but am trying to arrange to have a look while im down that way this month. Have sent the guy an email asking for more info but I will definitely be trying to bring the price down from that anyways... What would you suggest is a reasonable offer after looking at the pics? It comes with the following: ARB deluxe winch bullbar,WARN 9000lb winch, spot lights,4 INCH dobinson lift kit with PROCOMP ES9000 shock absorbers,10 inch outlaw polished alloy rims,305/70.16 BFGoodrich mud terrain tyers,UNIDEN UHF radio, dual batteries.

The car I need will be mainly used for touring and towing, but will get the chance to do a bit of mud work and some not so serious hill climbs etc...
The creature comforts of power everything and nicer interior are winners for me too though so I'm not sure which way to go?

Was thinking of getting a 100 series before this but have heard nothing but negatives on here about their performance... Looking nice just doesn't cut it though, right???

Cheers!!

Hi Moonman. I know that car .. belongs to a mate of mine (Luke) by the looks of it. Nice truck actually. It's a good factory multi valve turbo and good ones under 300kms are still pulling that sort of money easily enough around here. I sold my 96 multivalve for $35k around 12 months ago but it was stock as a rock and a few less kms so with all those extras thrown in it sounds like good value to me. Don't confuse the price of a factory direct injection turbo diesel to a petrol ... they are worlds apart both in performance, economy and subsequently price. Petrols or standard diesels for that matter are far cheaper than a factory turbo. The differences go much further than just the factory fitted turbo though .. they are direct injection for starters ... far more efficient with fuel and produce more power that a pre-combustion diesel, being factory turbo they are lower compression std, the clutches are 1 inch bigger, gearbox ratios slightly different and a few other things.

The car you are looking at has been well looked after and doesn't go off road much ... in fact I have never seen it off road personally.

You might want to consider asking him to throw in the standard suspension etc (I think he still has it) as you might suffer a bit getting a road worthy (or whatever you need it NT) as it's pretty tall .. and those 10 inch rims stick out past the guards a bit too.

If you are coming down this way then you should definitely make the time to have a good look at it as it's in pretty smick condition.

Cheers

Thanks Simo its definitly the car you are thinking of..!
Basically you just told me pretty much what i wanted to hear about it!
As from Dubmdunces comments would you say its due for any of the possible problems listed? As far as the road worthy i'd have to get that checked out.
Don't think their as strict here as in some other states but definitely something to consider. The lift side of things should be ok but the tyres out past the guards may be the problem.
Is it registered now? how far out would they stick?

Cheers Again!!

Checked out the NT Rego site but the answers i was looking for were't very clear... I guess that means there are ways around the rules eh?

NT Rego legislation states:
"Where the tyre or rim protrudes outside the normal mudguard line, flexible plastic, fibreglass or rubber flares must be fitted."
Does this mean that your tyres may protrude past the flares as long as you have them fitted?

4-Wheel Drive Off Road Passenger Vehicles
Replacement alloy or steel wheels and alterations to manufacturer's tyre, wheel rim and wheel track specifications are approved for 4-wheel drive off road passenger vehicles (eg. Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Holden Rodeo, Ford, Daihatsu, Suzuki, Land and Range Rover) subject to the following conditions.

Diameter: The overall diameter of the tyre and rim assembly must not exceed the specification of the manufacturer by more than 15mm.
Width: The wheel rim width must not exceed by more than 51mm, the manufacturer's standard minimum width wheel rim for the particular vehicle series.
Where the manufacturer offers an optional wheel, the maximum allowable width will be regarded as the width of that rim or the width of the standard wheel plus 51mm, whichever is the greatest.
Track: The wheel track may be increased by up to 51mm over the manufacturer's standard minimum track measurement for the particular vehicle series. Where the manufacturer offers the option of a wider track measurement (e.g. where wider wheels are optional), the maximum allowable track will be the maximum wheel track offered by the manufacturer or the track of the standard vehicle plus 51mm, whichever is the greatest.
Does anyone know the maximum diameter/width/track of an 80 series cruiser from when they were manufactured?
The bigger the better is what i want to hear...

If anyone can make any sense of this please let me know..!!

Cheers!!

Hi Moonman

The car is still registered as far as I know .. I hope it is as he drives it around a bit. I don't know of any dramas it has had and when you meet Luke you will see that he and his wife are lovely people. Luke is a straight shooter and won't muck you around.

Not entirely sure about the correctness of what Dumbdunce mentioned (sorry Dumbdunce) ... He is right that the timimg belt must be relaced every 100,000kms but it shouldn't cost $300 to have it done ... unless you went to Toyota of course .. should cost around half that. And as far as I know, the injector pumps and injectors only need rebuilding on an as needs basis not every xxx kms as Dumbdunce stated. Maybe the Toyota book said that but I don't recall reading that in my current factory turbo 80 service book (earlier 1993 model) ... that might be unique to the multivlaves though so you would need to confirm that.

Still you wouldn't rebuild the pump and injectors unless they need it ... why muck with something if it is working okay? You will soon know if they are buggered as it won't start or run smoothly ... easy to spot on a Diesel.

Anyway, good luck. When you looking to come down?

Cheers

I recently sold a 12/92 turbo diesel GXL with 315/75x16's, 5 inch lift air locker, alloy bar etc etc nice tidy vehicle with 350000 it wasn't a multivalve but it did go as good as any multivalve i've driven and i've driven heaps ! i sold it for $19500
Fuel economy was great 700k's main tank 1200ks both tanks weather it was loaded or not even with the 35's.
30 odd grand is a lot of money i think you would be better looking around for one slightly older but in as good nick a spending some of what you save on it!!

Hey Jibs,

Sounds interesting... Was looking for a 5spd manual rather than auto but
wouldn't mind a look. It might just take my fancy?

Can you post some pics or even email them to me

Maybe..? But remember that the price guide would only be indicating the stock standard price not including any mods or accessories. What if i offered $27k? Would that seem a better deal?

Guys
These factory turbo cruisers are hard to get, so they are pricey...this model (95) is one of the best to get because it has all the fruit std...i mean ABS under seat heater hdft motor etc etc....the later models had all the accessories deleted to get under the lux tax....from memory they were 78k new......so this all begs the question....10 year old 30k, vs 100 series 2002 t/d for 50k.. plus the cost of difflocks to keep comparing apples with apples...
MMMMMmmmmm whats better value????

Ok I'm kinda getting to the point where im gonna give up and get the next thing that comes along... But i know that won't happen so i'll just keep looking and stressing about what to do? I know what i like as far as looks go (100 series/New GU) and i know what i need it for (towing and touring and some tough 4WDriving) and i want the performance of the 4.2 turbo. But i just can't justify spending $45000+ for a 100 series or GU for a weekender/bush car. So basically the 80 series is looking the goods under $30000 with all the goodies. Obviously the km's are a lot higher too but the life expectancy of the diesels will hopefully out live me!? I guess i just need to see it drive it then hand over the money!!

Well it turns out im here in Brissy now and have checked out the 80 and took it for a run. Felt that it drove very well
and had plenty of guts although maybe wasn't in as good condition cosmetically as i'd hoped (interior a bit rough etc.)
but i've made an offer an after some hesitation made it to a final figure. So looks like it will be heading up to Darwin
in the next couple of days! Final price is $26500 which includes the original alloy rims and tyres as well as the
original suspension... Just in case???

Still there are plenty of mods still to come so maybe some new pics soon too...

Have i made the right decision???

Yeah you have done the right thing. You're just suffering from what is commonly referred to in the marketing world as "post purchase dissonance". In plain english you are just worried that you have not done the right thing and need others to support your purchase. So from me .. good one Moonman  :D I hope the cruiser looks after you.

Cheers

Hmmmm.... Not so impressed anymore!! Have had a couple of problems with leaking oil from the pressure line to the turbo
and from the intake to the turbo as well as from the inlet manifold!! In getting this all checked out i've discovered that the
car isn't even the multivalve motor that I thought and was told that was in it??!! Turns out its a 1HZ with an aftermarket bolt on
turbo. Looks like i have probably over paid this guy thinking it was something its not and then am going to have to spend
a heap of dollars on fixing it up...

Hey Simo, you seem to know about about these rigs, so surely you must have known it wasn't a multivalve or at least not a
genuine turboed engine? Hope you weren't just trying to make a sale for a friend?

Anyways its off the road for the moment, but thats life!! :x

Your kidding me

Man I apologies profusely and cannot believe it is not a multivalve. As far as I knew it was a factory turbo diesel multivalve. I would never lie so that someone could rip someone else of .. friend or no friend. Never.

If what you say is true Moonman, then I, like you, have been completely duped by Luke. I can't believe he would do that. I've known him for years and, whilst never seeing under the bonnet of his car, was always led to believe it was a multivalve turbo. It has the factory sticker and I (we) never questioned that and he never told us otherwise.

When he applied to join our club he listed the car as a multivalve turbo ... I mean why if that's what he said then we all believed him.

I am truly truly shocked by this Moonman and will take it up with Luke next week. I can't believe he would do that. I mean he must have known surely??

I guess I have learnt never to get involved in something like this before. I hope you didn't buy it on my advice alone .. I hope you looked at the vehicle yourself before buying it ... couldn't you tell the difference then? If I had of seen it I would know straight away.

Man I feel sick in the stomach  :x :bad-words:

I've just had another thought .. I am going to discuss this with Luke after Easter and tell him what has happened .... if it was advertised as a factory turbo diesel multivalve then I believe you have legal rights of recourse against him for false advertising. I will tell him this and suggest he contact you to make it right.

What a way to fcuk up the weekend!!!! :bad-words:

Yeah, that sux, I have just bought a 1990 GXL turbo diesel for 15k and she is goin fine, heaps of power. A 1HZ with turbo for a 96 model i would pay like 14k.

Unlucky moonman, would definetly try to either get compensated or a refund if posible. There is heaps of turbo cruisers around just beware of the fake ones, shame on that guy for selling it to you :x

It's cool Simo, apology accepted. Was not your fault at all mate... Mostly mine for not having the time to fully check it out
and then taking his word for it. I like you just assumed that because it had the multivalve stickers that it was. Not having
seen one before assumed that it would look like any other landcruiser diesel motor with a turbo on it. Obviously not eh?
I think that if it had turned out to be an aftermarket turbo and had no problems i would probably still not know the
difference!! Just typical of my luck though... Seriously though I don't think the other fella knew either. Either that or he should
have ben an actor!! Maybe his mechanic was doing shonkies!!

Anyways will see how things go and if it turns out to be something major we'll go from there... Hopefully not the case.

Cheers!

I would say a 1hz with aftermarket turbo would be worth at least $4k less than a factory multivalve. (i know id pay at least $4k more for a factory turbo multivavle than a 1hz with a turbo)

from redbook,
1996 DX 4.2D = $16,000 - $19,700
1996 GXL 4.2D = $17,300 - $21,100
1996 GXL 4.2TD = $20,900 - $25,300
1996 GXL 4.2TD = $22,500 - $27,100 (Auto)

Even if he himself didnt know it wasnt a factory turbo, I would be seeking compensation if i was you mate. You would have a very strong case in small claims court.

Theres always the old saying buyer beware, but theres also such thing as false andvertising and fraud.

that sucks the big one man, I would be asking for a refund or at the very least a fair bit of cash back.
as far as I know, (I may be corrected & I hope I am if I am wrong), but the GXL with the TD came out with a stronger Box, now if this 80 was just a 1HZ, it will have the lesser box that is not built to handle a turbo for as long as the factory turbo box
was it advertised on paper or on the net as a Multi-valve TD (as you would expect a 96 GXL TD to be), if so, you have him by the swingers.
good luck..
ps, what rims & tyres are on it?
