Guys, remember that the marshalls are all volunteers doing it for you guys to enjoy the event.
In saying that I am usually the first marshall to get in and try a track or help recover.
IMHO you approach an event like a hard night drive. It is in the bush and there are obstacles everywhere.
For the record I also hit a fallen cut tree going from the top of Lady Manor back to the bottom that was blocked from view, flat tyre broken CV that was new that morning and twisted sector shaft in the steering box. Mark on roof from SS3.
I ran Stage 3 and 4 just prior to the competitors doing them.

Being following up with the majority of the competitors and most are doing the November one, which is fantastic.
We will endeavour to cut back on any high speed stages. Try to make more variety into the stages. The difficulty in the stages; well everyone thought it wasn't too extreme (except Lady Manner), but we will tame it down a little.
Any more thoughts?

to those of you who feel they need to bag the marshalls for not helping out. why should they back into a river and risk F%$cking their car, when their cars are worth 40 to 50 grand. Aren't you guys supposed to be self recoverable, dont you have whinches, because i thought that this was a pre requisit to enter these events. i will quite happily help anyone in the bush bogged but as far as im concerned if someone is willing to enter their truck into an event that is designed to make you drive the hardest of hard then you should be able to look after yourself. I still think this theory applies in the bush but others obviously dont!!! if i find someone stuck ill help but why would you go out by yourself or in a group and put yourself in a position you can not get yourself out of. Thats leaving alot to chance, and imho is stupid. Marshalls are not their to recover vehicles they are their to supervise and event!!!!!!

A good effort Pete Even better if you know where you can improve and the only way to improve is to get out there and amongst it when the clocks running
This includes helping to recover broken down vehicles. If your theory of being "self recoverable" in all situations applied then there would be 10-15 vehicles still sitting out at the stage properties of the Outback Challenge Competitors enter these events knowing the chances of vehicle damage is very likely but I'm sure they don't expect to be left there to recover their vehicles when this isn't possible
I hope you at least checked on their situation and offered what assistance you could prior to leaving

It is in fact a responsibility of the marshlls to assure the smooth running of the event and this sometimes does involve being there to help out when needed with recoveries. It has ben claimed that some marshlls left teams to fend for themselves after things went wrong. A good stage manager knows what can happen and will have in place contingincy plans to jump in and help out as soon as asked to by competing teams. They DNF but are more than happy as this can be better than filling their truck with water. Any way as you wern't even there you prolly have no idea and are only just stirring the pot. I only replied as now all that read this are aware of the correct way things should be managed during events.

Secondly, how do you know the price of there cars, it could have been a $5,000 car. Marshals ask us if they can help- they know exactly what their in for.

It was just unfortunate that this particular stage we were let down-- and you think I'm not pissed off about it!!!!!!!!!

thats fine guys im not fussed what you say, im not stoopid enought to go out on my own or with people who wouldnt help me out of a sticky situation. I just think that people are quick to critise the marshalls when they are the ones giving up their time to make sure these events happen i can completely understand why they would not get involved in a recovery situation during a competition, (did anyone ever think that if they did get involved in recovery during the comp then they no longer have any car insurance to cover their own cars). But if you wanna have a crack at me then thats cool maybe the organisers should have made sure that the marshalls were aware that they were also revovery vehicles, and if this was the case then why were they not paid for their services? So maybe instead of having a crack at the little guys you need to address your concerns to the big guys in an apropriate manner.
