How do I loosen my stearing spline???

Hey guys I have been told that when I am doing my body lift that I have to loosen my stearing spline at both ends so it can slip when the body is lifted....

I don't know how to do this...

Any help would be great...

There will be a shaft that runs from the firewall down to the steering box, to connect this shaft (the steering shaft) to the box there will be whats called a rag joint (round disk of rubber with bolts through it) or a small universal joint. The shaft will fit into the end of the rag joint or UJ with a spline to locate it and prevent it from rotating, to stop the shaft from separating from the rag joint or UJ, there will be bolt going through a clamp on the side of the spline, loosen and remove this bolt to allow the spline to slide back and forth - a bit of wd40 will help loosen the bond, you may even need to pry gently in the clamp to relieve the clamp force.
On the shaft there will be round indent the whole way around the shaft - the bolt is meant to sit in this groove when the shaft is clamped down - stops the shaft from sliding out of the rag joint or UJ. After the body lift the bolt may or may not sit in this groove, depends on the setup.

Thanks for that, I went down to Chaos 4x4 and got my blocks today, and lachlan told me the exact same thing.

I will hopefully start the lift on Monday!

Yeah I have gone through all of the past posts to find out as much as I can. I am starting by making my brackets to lower the vacuum lines, fuel filter, and possibly the power steering fluid reservoir.
Then I will losen all of the required things like fuel filler hose clamp, steering spline.
Then I will do the radiator, or at least disconnect it.
Then take the bumpers off.
Then start on the blocks.

It should sort of go like that, I have a pretty good idea of what needs doing, its just getting it done with no hassels.

I am going to try and get the correct bolts for the front 2 and back to body mounts tommorow or just before I start on monday. It will definately make the back one easy. I am going to measure the thread with a thread gauge tommorow.

I will do my best to take a lot of photos and write up a how to.

Dave,

I have never heard of anyone haveing to mess with the steering column when doing a two ich body lift. The splines are plenty long enough and mine only sliped out about an inch with more than enough contact between the upper and lower shafts to be safe...
