oil in the hubs, how bad?

Post by Snarba »

Hi there recently checked my bearings and there was diff oil in the hubs...obviously the oil seal is rooted and I would have replaced it but on my MK patrol that requires taking the front diff out to get to em. Is it very bad to drive it with the bottom king pin emerged in diff oil? I'll get round to fixing it eventualy but I drive it too often to allow it the rest time to do the job ;) .....any thoughts?

I'm assuming you meen in the CV ball joint. Like 460cixy said, check if it doesn't oil standard (I know nothing about MK patrols).

But If it is a genuine leak then I wouldn't leave it too long. My father and I a rebuilding a LN65 lux, and the front axle had shot seals, and the oil got into the grease, with some added water etc. point is the king pin bearings were completely shot. (cages were rusty, took 20minutes to find all the rollers). When dad asked the guy who used to own it if he ever maintained the fron axle, he said that he did the bearings but the seals looked good so he didn't bother.

Sorry about the rant, but i'm saying from experience if it was me, I'd have it done ASAP (next 2 or 3 days).

Check to see if the diff isnt full of grease. Our old 80 did the axle seals and the cv grease and ended up in the diff somehow. The diff was nice and quiet, but the cv clunk was getting louder and louder
