Gday peoples, My 97 v8 disco has developed an engine wine. Its a dull wining sound and is engine reves related Ie it increases with engine revs. I hear alot of older commodors with the same wine. Thinking either Alternator bearings or aircon bearings. Any ideas?

Allready did but beeing partially deaf isnt doing it for me. the two suspects are the alternator and aircon compressor. both as load as each other. Interestingly though when I start it first thing in the morning the engine idel is slightly erratic as well and started same time as wine so im leaning more to alternator bushes or bearings.chimpboy wrote:I would do the listening-through-a-hose trick. No chimp I cant its got a serpintine belt. A mechanoc I just spoke to recons its the ideler pully more than anything, so I hope hes right.chimpboy wrote:Can you remove one belt to eliminate one or the other? I figure it is the bearing in either the idler pulley, aircon pump, alternator or power steering pump. Possibly a combination of all of the above.

I did this yesterday for my whine and it appears to be the alternator. I saw a mechanic I used to use do this with a stethoscope type tool. Didn't think of just using a bit of hose but it worked well.chimpboy wrote:I would do the listening-through-a-hose trick. It didn't help locate the vacuum leak though. A whistle coming from the driver's side of the plenum chamber somewhere. I thought I had fixed it previously but it came back fairly quick.
I'm glad someone has said you can replace the idler bearing for $6. I would have just bought the pulley as last time in my Rodeo the bearing and pulley were one piece for $25.

vacume leak the easiest way to find it is with the wifes vaccume cleaner...
remove the MAF (carby or equivelent) and tape the vacume hose to the remainder of the inlet manifold.
stick a potatoe into the end of your tail pipe(s) and with the vacume cleaner as far away as possable and with something between you and it as a sound dampner turn it on..
a, make sure that you have the potatoes only just over the end of the pipe(s)
b, make sure the vaccume cleaner can breath, if it has one of those little holes that can be opened to stop you creating no flow open that up..
you should find said leak in no time..

I got told that on AULRO too. Haven't done that method yet though but I will soon as it must be the only way of doing it without leaning over a hot motor and revving it so you can hear the whistle as the revs die down. Tried soapy water spray and WD-40 but it didn't help.
Might try it tonight as it is really pissing me off right now.
