just come back from camping show in adelaide where i was talking to the cooper tyre agent, he told me i could put 305/70/16 on my gu 8 inch rims no problem and that they will fit under guards with out lift and would be legal. anyone know if this is right, look a bit wide. live in sa.

Who? I'd say he's wrong. Checking the Cooper's website, the ATR is 837mm OD, or 33" in old money. Legally, you're only allowed to go 15mm larger than the largest tyre offered as an option for the vehicle by the manufacturer. Anything in your owner's manual or on your tyre placard have an OD of 822mm? S/Ts lits at 833mm, STTs at 840mm.

8 inch rim width is the minimum for that size, so you're OK there. NFI about clearances - what's on there now?

They may fit, you're unlikely to ever have trouble, but I doubt they're legal.

Isn't the issue with he overall diameter being too large ? At 33"?

Increasing thre tyre width does not increase the track, so it would be legal widthwise. Only when you change rims to a more offset type you alter the track width, which is illegal over a certain point. (~25mm?)

I have 265 /75/16 now and wanted to go wider with Toyota rims for more offset. this what i asked and was told ok.

It is only legal to increase wheel track by a small amount (Varies state to state), different offset rims would increase your track, but it depends how much if they are going to be illegal or not.

Is that size standard for a Patrol? It's nominally 32", and I don't think too many authorities will bother with a 1" increase (despite being technically illegal.)

Tyre width: I believe you're typically allowed 1.3 times the maximum width offered by the manufacturer (may be 1.5x for beam axles front and rear), so I don't think 305 is a problem.

Track: Beam axles front and rear are allowed to increase track by 50mm (25mm for anything with independent suspension at either end.) AFAIK, Patrol are zero offset and 'Cruiser about -23mm - so you'd be OK for track.

Guards/mudflaps will be your problem. You want tyres which are (nominally) 40mm wider, and an extra 46(ish)mm track. The outer sidewall of your tyres will move out 40mm or so, and I'd be surprised if that's inside the line of your GU guards.

What's wrong with 285/75-16? Same OD as the 305/70-16, slightly narrower, higher load rating = tougher tyre. Should fit GU rims on a GU without trouble. But no extra track...

my mate has cooper stt`s they cant even go up my pebble crete drive way ay slow speed. Now granted its a bit steep. We tried it in low range with air lockers on and it just spun half way up and wouldnt go.

Now I have BFG M/T and i can go up slow in 2WD no hassels

coopers suck in my opinion for grip

Hmmm. Somebody with an MT/R pattern for an avatar, and a tyre retailer.

No bias there.

Note that neither have bothered to ask about the intended application for the tyres, much less WHICH Cooper tyre you are considering. Also note that neither have suggested an alternative - just anti-Cooper sentiments.

Toyo's M/T (which some believe is the design upon which Cooper based the STT) does seem popular in the States.

You could also consider the Mickey Thompson MTZ, but it's reportedly made by Cooper on the same carcass as the STT - so it can't be any good. Similarly, find out who actually MAKES ProComp tyres before you consider them.

Best to stick with the good OLD BFG Mud Terrain - which is now owned by Michelin, and (I believe) made outside the good ole US of A. Or you could go with the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R - Jeeps are sold with Goodyear tyres, so they must be good.

i have had MTR's, Cooper ST's and STT's in the new patten and now MTZ's. the MTRs were in a 285/75/16 and rest were 315/75/16. i would never would have coopers again. in the STT's i had all sorts of viabration issues and bad scalloping in only about 15000km/s. Coopers Australia were very good about it and did a deal on some MTZ's which after about 4000kms they seem good. As for the MTZ's and the Coopers being based around the same carcass i would say not as the MTZ's are about an inch taller than the STT's.
I still wish i had MTR's thoughas i had a great run out of them

MTZ and STT are close in carcuss contruction but not the same if you wanna know the difference give them a call or check there websites
