Starter Motor Dead - Got it working again

Post by Nev62 »

The starter died on my 6.5 GM diesel today. When I pulled it apart the plate holding the bushes had welded itself to the end cap where one of the screws the both together. I had to pry them apart. Would this starter be rebuild-able or am I better off trying to find another? Thought of using one off a BB Chev but not many with the off-set bolts and the BB only has to work against 145PSI. The 6.5 Diesel is 400 PSI :?

Got it to work :)

Well I cleaned up the end cap and brush plate with a wire wheel and the communicator with some emmery paper and a small screw driver, put it back together and hit it with some power. Bugger me it not only spins up but seems to have more power than before it stopped working

The only problem is it sounds like a sewing machine on steriods when the motor fires. Let off the ign key and you can hear it spining down for a second or two and then all is quite. Don't know how long it is going to last or what is causing to whining noise but like I said it now spins the engine with more power. I might try to find new end cap, brush holder, brushes and communicator,

if it's still a bit noisy most common faults are :
worn bushes
dry bushes
not enough grease

hope that helps

Bushes are worn but not making the noise before I pulled it apart.
Bushes could be dry but again I did not really touch them.
put in a truck load of grease but could have missed something.

When I bench tested it, there was no noise. Like I mentioned you get it once the engine fires up (rev at around 750rpm) so guess it is the extra speed before you disengage the starter (let go of the key). Sounds a little like a Mack truck starting only higher pitched
