TD42 turbo on a TB42
TD42 turbo on a TB42
Sorry to ask this when I am sure it is searchable but it is late and I got bored reading through search results. What parts from a TD42 turbo setup can be used on a TB42 and what would the expected power gain be. So far I have heard that the TD42 exhaust manifold is not rated high enough to give boost for a petrol engine but is fine if not going to powerful. Also have heard that due to the TD42s turbo being for a diesel it is no good for the petrol engine and so would need to be replaced, what would be a recommended replacement. As is obvious I am looking for a budget setup that give good power for dollars spent, so any other suggestions welcome.

TB42 and TD42 use the same exhaust bolt out pattern so the turbo manifold fits like a glove, the turbo bolts to that and then you just work out where to get your oil and water feeds from
there both got the same block and crank u can change a petrol 2 deisel wif a lot of fing around

Re: TD42 turbo on a TB42
Having a go at that calculator, a TB42 will only need a GT25 turbo. That is with a max rev@4000 on 10-12 pound boost. Does that mean a T3/4 would be overkill?tuf045 wrote:a good guide to turbo sizes can be used @will off road wrote:Sorry to ask this when I am sure it is searchable but it is late and I got bored reading through search results. Its not cool, unless it's got boost :)
Re: TD42 turbo on a TB42
T3/T4 turbos are the norm on cheap set ups. Give "MULISHA" a pm, he is setting up his now with a T4 turbo i think, but having a bit of trouble with tuning.MARKx4 wrote:Having a go at that calculator, a TB42 will only need a GT25 turbo. Re: TD42 turbo on a TB42
That would be nice, but alot of us dont have the cash to throw at a motor like that. Most just want to get the old tb42 moving a little better and a turbo set up is cheaper then a V8 conversion and if set up on straight gas it is cheaper aswell.GQ4.8coilcab wrote:T3/T4 turbos are the norm on cheap set ups. For what you are doing you'd be better to go too small thanto big. Too big will give you a really laggy drive which you afford when you only have 4000 revs to play with. Don't get caught in the bigger is better idea as it isn't true. Not with a vehicle where you need drivavility anyway. If you want to size your turbo correctly you need to work out how many lbs of air your engine will need (and can use) and then get aturbo that will supply that. A very rough guide is multiply lbs by 10 and it will give hp, (but there's a lot more to it!) I'm no expert but I've just worked through this with some to spec the turbo for my conversion. t is amazing the crap you'll get if you don't deal with people who really know. I got my turbo off the Garrett agents in NZ and they have a very good reputation for specing turbos right. I'll find out in a couple of weeks.
