how high should i go?
how high should i go?
currently running a 3" lift and 35s..
with the fron swaybar disconnected i scrub a little in the front.
and the types of tracks/lines i drive i scrape a bit here and there.
have been thinking of going 6" maybe 8" but not sure....
atm it drives fine onroad and id like to keep it like that as its my daily driver.
anyone run a 6" lift or bigger on a GU as a DD?
also, ive got the castor corrected for 3" so if i were to go to a 5" would i need to do anything to the castor?
ive heard people say that for 2" lift theres no need to touch castor.
im assuming that if its corrected back to standard for the 3" then if i went 5" it would be only 2" over what it is now so it would be fine?
opinions??

Would you rather scrape here and there or put it on its side due to a large lift .....keep it low .....add bars for protection ........
I dont have GU experience ....but I have GQ SWB experience and yes it ended up on its side ........
If you must add more lift keep it @ 4" lift total
MY 0.02 cents worth k bye

you need to ask yourself what your trying achieve to big lift?
as the other bloke said to high and you'll put it on its side and Gu's arent cheap to repair.
if you got money burning in your pocket why not fit a set of lockers and get some decent offroad tyres like some swampers or simex's.
then do your hard stuff then re asses it then..
if its for looks i wouldnt waste your time....

ive already got a locker, i have bars except for the rear.
im going to stick to 35s as thats what its engineered for.
does anyone know where to measure height of the headlights? its gotta be 1.2m or under but is that from the top of the headlight? the middle or the bottom?
the only reason i thought 8" was because its the same price as 6" but i did think it was a little too high.
im thinking 5" or 6" maybe then?
im not interested in looks or anything, i actually like it how it looks now. it all looks in proportion.
i just dont like scraping on things all the time. and after riping my tail light out the other week i decided to look into getting a little more height.
id prefer to just do a custom rear bar and get rid of the plastic crap but i have to keep an eye on weight. im already 2.64t empty.
add some camping gear for a weekend and a passenger and im on gvm

What is getting hooked up? Your diffs, or just th rear bar?

If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
maybe you need a blade and a hydrolic ram attched to the bullbar to negate the need for liftTiny wrote:he got hooked up on the chassis driving something like thisbogged wrote:Theres nothing to say you wont get hooked up sometimes with a 4/6/8/10inch lift.j-top paj wrote:im thinking 5" or 6" maybe then?

I run 6inch suspension lift in my gu as a daily driver and apart from getting in and out of it it drives fine.It doesnt raise the centre of gravity all that much and i dont use sway bars

I run a 2 inch body and 2inch suspension lift. have yet to find it has held me back. With the lockers as well. Between 2-4 inchs suspension lift is all I think is needed.
I'm planning on spring retainers and longer shocks next to get the flex with a lower center of gravity.
6 and 8 inch lifts, seem to be more about looks rather than how well it performs, in my experiance

yeh i run 75mm springs with 30mm packer and they have sagged heaps and was getting hung up bad last time i was out so now going a 5 inch (will sag to be 4-4 1/2 ) lift, thought about 6 but i have seen too many struggle for stability on hill climbs etc so yes i think 4 is heaps for most things. I dont want to mess with running castor plates to impede me further so i am going with 2dextreme arms .
I'm kinda suprised you would even consider going to 8 inch.
You have been around the scene a fair while now and done heaps of wheeling with probably lots of different setups. Surely you would see the benifits and disadvantages of each.
How many tracks out there that you frequent really need that sort of rampover?
The day you came to Yawall with me you drove everything that I did and you were heaps more worried about damage on the outside of your car than the underneath. So i wonder how worried you will be when your trucks leaning towards rolling into oblivion

not doing body lift, too much stuffing around and then i have to get it re-engineered toojessie928 wrote:go 6"
either 6" spring outright
or 4" spring and 2" body.
the second options gives you loads more room under the vehicle for stuff, but sacrificing a couple inched chassis clearance.

occasionally diffs, but mostly front and rear. and also rampoverbogged wrote:Theres nothing to say you wont get hooked up sometimes with a 4/6/8/10inch lift.j-top paj wrote:im thinking 5" or 6" maybe then?

we have 6" in my old mans GU, and we dont have a problem with it, it handles well on and off road, you just need to pick your lines, so you dont put it over, 8" is waytoo much,
also, the 1200mm headlight measrement is to the top of the headlight, my old mans GU measured in at 1250 on 35s, we out a winch in, and it didnt budge, so we went the next step, we pulled out the old 2.8T and put in a 4.2turbo, it now measures in at 1225, so we are neary there,
we just got itengneered using a guy that didnt measure the headlight height, it all comes down to who yu use,

Ummm ... you think an 8" lift is NOT going to require stuffing around?j-top paj wrote:not doing body lift, too much stuffing around and then i have to get it re-engineered toojessie928 wrote:go 6"

Either you're taking the piss or you need to do more reading on this topic before asking anymore questions as you're just going to embarrass yourself ... more than you already have!

Matt, if you wanna go 6, just try it... at the end, nobody ever regrets it.
My cruiser (yeah, i know yours is a patrol) was standard (not happy), later it was 4" higher (still not happy), and some more months later it went up to 6" (happy now)
EDIT. I dont think i would go any higher...

Where as mine went from 2" to 2+2, then 4+2 and for some stupid reason thought I needed to go bigger and went to 7+2 which of course was too big. Now I've gone back to between 4 and 5" springs and I want to take my body lift out (as soon as I find someone to buy my bar-work) and trim the guards to run the 37s. I know a 5 inch spring lift with 35s works really well with a GU and the tyres don't scrub. If you feel you have to go bigger than your current height, I wouldn't go over that.
