Got a whine in the 80 can't pick it thought was the diff, changed diff center whine still there not as bad as before i changed it,also changed wheel bearings.
noise is real bad at 80 km, before and after not bad at all
Had a arb roof rack for ages. Just put on new tyres, bfg muddies. Diff center was just replaced with a reco one cause i thought that was where the sound was coming from, and replaced the wheel bearings at the same time as the diff. all ways grease the uni's and i changed the gear box and transfer oil there was no water or mud in that.
The noise appeared when i got bogged up to the head lights in a huge bog hole.
Pull the rear t/shaft out and test drive it using front diff' the front might give a few more noises but you should be able to isolate the original noise a bit more. Does it vary from load to no load or stay the same?
Had this before in a constant 4wd 80 and it was the front diff gears, find someone with a set of steelman chassis ears and clip them to the front and rear diff and also the gearbox and transfere case, if you switch channels to the respective components you'll soon find the noise, if its at 80 ks it will likely be diff gears, bearings generally are noisier on corners as weight transfers.
Currently building a tray middy 5.7 Gen 3 and TO4ZR turbo, ditching the gas, it's ace but I want to do longer events and carry jerries.
I'll be running the All4 colors and Peninsula Per4mance as this is the new wing to PGS where I'm running the new 4wd dyno.

Real sorry to hear about Jim, all the best from me if you speak to him.
Had an 80 series at work with a whining noise that sounded like gear noise. Was there in every gear.
Car yard took it to gearbox shop and they said it was the clutch, and it had a petrol clutch fitted?
80 series is a diesel with a 1HZ.
Will let you know the outcome.
