stuffed shock/shock mount??

Post by daveo »

ok, vehicle in question is a 98 hilux, ifs.

doing a routine check over today i found that the front left shock was loose in its mount a the top (pin type). removed the shock to find this:

sems its been this way for a while and the pin has been wearing against the shock mount, wearing into the pin about 1.5mm and into the metal of the mount probably about 4mm.

tested the shock, seems to be ok, sticks a bit when fully compressed but with a little help it then extends fully in a smooth manner.

so, what i want to know is
1. should i replace the shock? thinking probably yes.
2. what to do about the ovalised mounting hole

cheers

maybe weld a thick washer on the top and maybe bottom if you can and that might help with the shock tower

when putting the shock back in tonight it seems that it has been ceused by detoritation of the rubber bush above the shock mount, allowing movement. could have also been the useless farks that i seem to attract when geting it serviced.. another story for a different place.

simkell: by reclaimation i assume you mean welding it up then redrilling the hole?

anybody do me a good deal on a pair of front shocks for a 98 lux?? pm me!

Hi Mate , I have had a few do this mainly on prado's the shock rubber has either deteriated (sp) or the lip on the shock rubbers weren't inserted correctly into the mount and the movement has chewed out the mount , weld it is easy or buy a replacement mount from toyota , on the prado they unbolt on the front

spoke to my local mech and hte guy at arb and both reckoned that the lip on the washers on a set of new shocks would be fine so i picked up a pair of old man emus and will fit them up this arvo.

the mounts on my hilux are welded on, not bolt on, unfortuneatly.
