hilux diff inspect out of car
If i just overtook you head to your nearest mechanic
Assuming you have a whole axle (with wheels off the ground):
1 - check that it rotates smoothly (without any rough spots that may mean damaged or worn teeth)
2 - check preload and backlash by hand (i.e. pinion should have no movement up-down or side-side, but should have a small amount of "backlash" - (free rotation) - but it should be fairly "tight" throughout the backlash.
3 - to check ratio - count number of pinion turns to make 1 wheel turn fully (while holding the other stationary (if non LS)) - and double that number to get the diff ratio (i.e. if it takes 2 pinion turns to turn 1 wheel 1 revolution, then you have a 4:1 diff).
