UHF Radio channels

Post by Sammyboy »

Hi all,
I just purchased an older model Uniden UH-011 from E-bay. I am unfamiliar with the use of UHF radios as I have never used one in a car before. When I am driving on the open highway, do all the truckies/busdrivers use channel 40 or something different? What's the best channel to use when driving on a remote 4WD track? What channel do the Emergency Services use? My UHF does not automatically select the channels currently being used by others, so I have to select the channels manually. Thanks for your time, I would apprieciate any advice.

Sam,

try http://www.telstat.com.au/channel-use.htm as a start.

Around major cities, Ch29 seems to be gaining followers in place of Ch40 to avoid the brain dead that clutter it up.

Google away for further reading

I dont know of any uhf that will automatically select channels that are being used, but using the scan function it will flick thru the 40 channels and then you can select the one with the most traffic.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

Mate on all major highway except the pacific the main traffic (truckie) is 40. around cities it is 40. On the pacific highway, from about the logan motorway down it is 29. On the f3 between newcastle and Syd it is mainly 29 although some still use 40. As was stated above you get a lot of ***heads getting on there just to annoy people, so like me (I am an interstate truck driver) you will find that you will reach for the off switch a bit when you are in major cities.
When you want to have a chat with someone you go to another channel and chat away at will, Dont have long conversations on 40 or 29 in there respective areas.
Some people are trying to make 10 the 4x4 channel, I dont know how this idea is going. Caravaners travelling around OZ tend mainly to be set on 18.
Then as stated above, there are the repeater channels, which I dont know much about.
On your uhf the non repeater channels are simplex and the repeater channels are duplex.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.
Dave.
