G'day everyone,
I've got a 94' Hilux with a safari Turbo and snorkel kit on it and would like to get more spool noise. I have a 3inche no muffler exhaust and does anyone know how much boost the safari turbo is putting out?
I know i've got to find out how much boost it's pushin' but it is a standard safari turbo so if anyones got any facts it would be greatly appreciated.

noise from a turbo is usually a bad sign. if you want it to make noise, take to the turbine and compressor wheels with the pliers and bend them up a bit.

4 Cylinder diesel turbos never really sound any good, the regular exhaust noise will always be louder than any turbo whistle. even if it does sound awesome, you won't hear it in the car - get someone else to drive it past you a couple of times at fll noise and see if it sound like you want.

Your absolutly right. Mine sounds wicked (in my opinion :D )from outside. But in the cab all you mainly hear is the engine noise.
Oh and standard I think they usually run around 8 or 9 psi but the best way is to fit a boost gauge, while your at it fit a pyro too. It pays to know what is happening in your engine.

pyro gauge looks at your exhaust temps, this is a great way of keeping an eye on the overall strain on the engine itself

A pyrometer it measures the temp of your exhaust gasses, either pre or post turbo depending on how its mounted.
It tells you how hard you are working the engine so when the temps start to get a bit high you can back off.
Also a good tuning tool if you are playing with fueling (more fuel = higher temps).
I also find mine good for when idling down you can make sure its at a sensible temp before shutting off the key.

it should be pushing 7-8psi or near abouts. You should be getting plenty of induction noise from the turbo itself and under load you should be hearing the turbo spool up, especially when boost creeps up around 4 psi +.

I had a 93 hilux with an old ARB turbo on it, modified with a 36 exhaust housing. Ran 8.5psi boost. 2.5" mandrel bend exhaust, lukey resonator only. Except for the larger exhaust housing, it was pretty much as set up by ARB.

Sounded great, but not a lot of "spool up" noise, more wastegate noise than anything especially inside the cab.

When the turbo was orginially installed on a previous car, it had a very small exhaust housing and spooled at very low revs (just off idle) this did make a fair bit more spool noise, but again, it was not evident in the cabin.

In comparison, Safari turbo'ed cars ran a much smaller turbo and always seemed much quieter overall.

In any case, as it is a high frequency noise, it will always be hard to hear in the cabin over the engine noise.

i have a 03 hilux 3.0td and all i did was change the pipe that runs from the turbo to the engine . the original was about 6mm thick alloy. i just replaced it with some intercooler piping. you can hear my turbo heaps louder (even than the exhuast) its sounds sick but its only good for noise but hope this helps.

Simple, fit a pod filter straight off the turbo intake. Did this to my surf as a temporary setup and turbo hiss is ridiculous. Nice growl off boost though.

Maybe invest in a wank tap (blow off valve). Always funny to see the expression on an Evo driver's face when u pull up at the lights in a truck with a BOV and give it a rev brrrrm-kachiiii!

but not half as funny as the guy in autobarn rubbing his hands together as you leave with your $500 "silent" BOV -

BOV's won't make any noise in a diesel because there is no throttle butterfly to shut and pressurise the inlet piping. Pressure in the inlet manifold will never go higher than boost pressure, and on a light throttle (i.e gearchanging) boost will simply start to fall as fuel is pulled out of the engine.

In fact, even if you could make a BOV work on a diesel, it would be exactly the opposite of what you would want to do as it woudl dramatically increase turbo lag. With no throttle and an engine taht can;t be run too lean, keeping as much pressure in the inlet piping during gearchanges is exactly what you want to do.

BOV's present on ALL petrol turbos in order to stop the turbo stalling and shearing the blades off the compressor. This occurs when 100,000rpm of turbo is met by a pressure wave of compressed air which comes back and smacks the turbo once the throttle is shut. The BOV uses vaccum(from the manifold on the engine side of the throttle butterfly) on one side of a diaphram and a spring to hold it shut until there is a big pressure differential between the compressed air upstream of the butterfly and vacuum in the plenum. this then opens the BOV.

Basic Diesel engine theory would indicate there is no butterfly in the throttle, no source of load related vacuum , and no need to bleed off boost pressure in the inlet manifold as the lean condition it creates won't hurt a diesel in the least- that, in itself, will reduce boost.

PS I have a home made turbo kit (I didn't make it!!!) for a nissan SD33 in the shed and someone really wanted the BOV sound. they went to great lengths to fit a butterfly (falcon, I think) to create some vacuum in order to open the BOV (from a TX3 turbo, or something). It is ugly beyond words- whte whole manifold is booger welded exhaust tube and surpasses pointless.

However, the kit was free (blown turbo) and did come with a nice old AirReseach external wastegate. Gave me a good laugh though.

I just want to know how a 3.0 TD gets more spool sound on the outside of the car that is completely standard than a 2.8 with an aftermarket turbo with 3 inche no muffler exhaust, and a slightly bigger turbo. How the hell does that work? I'm just checking to see of any easy solutions for a louder turbo on the outside of the car. I think that loud turboes sound great.

Ummm buy a 3.0L if you really really really have to sound like that. Your asking a silly question, every different engine and turbo combination, along with tune etc, will generate different noise etc. Or record a turbo spooling up and play it loud on your stereo every time you take off :roll:

Steve, the 2L-T along with quite a few other diesel engines have throttle butterflies, I assume for the purpose of engine braking and also EGR control and to enhance shutoff smoothness. A BOV would work on any of these engines.

its just the sylye of turbo which makes the sould different
have a mate with a safari and heaps of engine mods, running no mufflers and you can't here the turbo. CT20 turbos sound awsome on 2.8's the same bloke has another lux with one on it and sounds mint.
All factory toyota turbos have a real good whistle, i think its all in the stlye of housing and turbine blades
gq wagon now a gq ute, straight gas tb42 with a thing on the side that makes it go fast
