Considering a FJ40 rebuild
Hey guys considering buying an FJ40 or BJ40/42 and doing a bit of a rebuild on it. Ive noticed there are many sites in the states that offer brand new Tub's that can be dropped straight onto the back. Is there anywhere in australias that make these?
also where is the best place to look for 40's in brisbane, therese a few FJ40's in the trader but id really prefer a BJ42 if i can find one.
also, is it worth trying to get a later model with disc brakes already installed or better to just save the money and drop a 60 series front end under it?
i am looking at one on sunday, he is asking $950 but states that the tub will probably need replacing due to rust.
Basically looking for any info you guys can offer me, it seems that the one to look for would be a BJ42 LX but these are probably rarer than rust free FJ40's
Im not opposed to a bit of rebuild work and in fact look forward to it as a project, that said i would prefer to not have to replace the whole tub.....
thanks in advance guys.

There used to be a company around noosa someware that made
fibreglass tubs and panels for 40,s and 45,s at one stage many
years ago there was a lot of converted 40,s with 350 chev,s
advertised for sale in Qld
we don,t see many these day,s but in the 80,s they were everywhere
They made a fibrglass willy,s jeep tub for the LJ80 zook as well.
Jeeeez half you blokes would,nt remember the 80,s shit now I feel old.

I have a complete body from them sitting at home. Talk about expensive and time wasting ornaments to litter the garage with.
Although it will be a car one day.

that looks perfect, anyone know what one of those would set you back? the full kits i mean?
Around $10,000 for a full kit to your spec.
The tubs are a bit over $5000 retail, there is a 1 year wait on product too. So order and pay now, pick up around 12 months.
I would sell you mine for less than that (complete kit, gelcoated, all stainless nuts and bolts, a chassis and some build plates, for a lot less than you would buy it) Mine is all new and unused aswell.
Or you could buy my car already finished (no fibreglass body, but no rust)

Forget Oz East unless you have an endless wallet and alot of patience.
Talk to a guy called Keith Donaldson at danoaldson fibreglass on phone no 5429 5372. He works from home in the bribie island area. He did my tub for $3200 finished in black gelcoat. I spent another $1100 on bar work for the seating frame and restraints and the roll bar mounts as per Qld trans. Absolutely great guy - works from home = great prices!
And for everyone else, he also has moulds for every other panel for 40 series and Jeeps, as well as custom mould like one piece tilt fronts and targa style top half roofs.
The dimensions of the tub are slightly different so some things may need ardjuctment or building to suit such as fuel tank, rool bar and soft top. email me if you want any further details.
However I agree with bj on roids - if you can find one done for a reasonable price then go for it and adjust to suit. However like you say build it yourself and you'll know what yopu've got as well as the satisfaction! Cheers, hope this helps.

May the best of your past be the worst of your future and it's only illegal if you get caught!
Also, he loves anything custom ie. how about a 40 series tub with an esky glassed into the rear floor or glassed in compartments for your streo amp and battery? Talk to him as I have found him more than eager to step up to a challenge. His turnaround on a tub for me was 9 weeks back in 99.

sounds good grumpy stumpy, im gonna take a look at BJ's BJ42 on saturday, and if its as good as he says it is , it might find a new garage.
After looking at a few FJ40's and the rust in them, my interest in a full rebuilt has dwindled
will keep this in mind though, sounds like he does the perfect tub for half the price

I too found that I needed patience, then I held off payment until he finished it, and he needed money one day and here it was finished and ready to go.
After more than 12 months I was pretty amazed.
