i asked this a week or so ago and got told it wont last long under the weight of a 4wd and has a high 1st gear. but it can be built to be very strong. but most recomend getting an adapter bellhousing to use a turbo pattern auto.

i'll be going through the same proces later this year with my trimatic 308.

T700 is 4spd, 3spd in commondore is either a traumatic behind the 253 /308 or T400 behind turbo pattern 308.

I used to run the traumatic gearbox in my LX Torana. Used to fry 1-2 boxes a year. Mind you, you can get them for around $50 so you can treat them as a disposible part. The gearbox can't handle worked 6's so you would kill em with V8 power. If you want to high stall one you just have to use a Gemini torque converter. This gives you a 2500 stall. Go the T400 or T700.

I ran one in a HQ Monaro behind a 308....was still going strong at 330000 kliks.
Never had any issues with it in 16 years ....but it was serviced religiously every 25000 k .
I also think the 308 ones were stronger than the others but I never really found out for sure....but it handled a really heavy right foot in the MUN for a lot of k,s

holden backed the 308 with the same gearbox they backed the 253 with from factory im pretty sure.

as did with the 4spd they put behind the 202 6 cylinder, they used this box, i think m20 by build plate behind a v8 too im pretty sure.

I'm no Holden guru, but I thought 308's had T400's and 202's/253's had the trimatic.

Just a note, there are manual valvebodies for trimatics but none with reverse pattern.

I;m sire one could be built to take the abuse, but the overdrive and low 1st gear of the T700 would be far superior. T700's are pretty cheap now too.

Hugo's Raceglides builds Racematics for drag cars. They handle 400 - 500hp no worries. Their light weight, and light weight internals are great for getting as much power as possible to the ground.

Worse thing about this setup would be Gearing .

Tri's have a 1-1 top and a 2. somthing low granted the low is increased by the converter .

A stock holden v8 has a short rev range 1000 thru 5000 and prob bouncing at that , so you gear the diffs for the highway so you can at least criuse at 100 ks without ringing its neck and then your low range will be horrid for down hills and up , the converter will make up a little for up hill but the consecuence will be heat , (major headache for autos no matter how good the biuld is)

For a car that is geared either way ( off road or on) they could be a great box ,

If you want to spend the bucks on transfer gears ect twin case to get your low range up, You could then run 3-5's or somthing in diffs which would settle the engine on the highway (all tire size dependent)
Few thoughts :)

Not sure but Tri to hilux transfer adapter don't think ive seen one.
most have been the manual toy box .

Yep ...mostly agree with you ..EXCEPT...the auto mechanic who serviced it for most of its life said early in the piece that 308 ones were built a little different inside..and as he said to me at the time.."think about it ..yours is copping 240 hp now as against 180hp out of a 253 "...couldny argue with his logic at the time as I didnt know any different ....n prolly still dont :D :D :D
