Just wondering if gasless mig welding leaves the slag stuf that arc welding does ?
Cheers Nick

No it doesnt to the same extent but it does still leave a little that will need wire brushing before painting.
Gasless mig wire is acually flux cored (a small tube with flux down the middle) so like stick you are putting down contaminents as well as steel.
When using gas the only thing going down is steel.

funny, i thort it was the other way around... the mig tends to shite allover the arc when welding painted or slightly rusty stuf...Modified Toy wrote:Mig the steel needs to be clen to weld good, stick can pretty mutch weld any thing no matter how shitty it is

God of Magnificant Ideas!
Migs hate heavily rusted steel and arent overly happy on semi rusted material, they "cope" ok with surface rust.macca81 wrote:funny, i thort it was the other way around... the mig tends to shite allover the arc when welding painted or slightly rusty stuf...Modified Toy wrote:Mig the steel needs to be clen to weld good, stick can pretty mutch weld any thing no matter how shitty it is
Migs hate paint, especially enamel paint & powder coated surfaces.
Migs also dont like galvinised material much either, they'll weld it but its not a pretty weld compared to what you can achive with an arc.
Always supprise's me the number of farmers that own a mig and still bring their broken equipment to town to be repaired...... the mig they bought wont generaly cope with the painted and rusty and earth covered machinery..... silly buggers, all they have to do is fire up the old arc welder they all have sitting in the corner of the shed collecting dust and they'd be away.
probably why they are just 'famers' and not welders !
