Rockhopper Gears and Similar
A question.
Is it worth installing rockhopper gears or going dual cases.
Pros Vs Cons.
Im just toying with ideas, whenever I go wheeling I pretty much use Low 1st or 2nd and thats it, would be good to have some lower gears. I might be able to get some cheap and may be worth it as opposed to dual cases and all the trouble. I know duals is the best, but I cant realistically see me doing that mod untill many other things are sorted out first.
Only worry I have with the low gears is will I have em too low so that I either have to crawl everywhere where 4 High is too high?

if you can live without your stock gears then you should be right
what do you wheel in most of the time - if its mud i can't see a big need for low gears atm

I went through the same dicision when i built boatlux.
I went for the dual cases as they gave more for less.
I could keep my stock gearing (good for mud)
I got lower gearing (100:1 compared to 85:1)
Cheaper (at the time they were)
and i can select 2wd low range which is good for hiluxs without longfields as there is no stress on the CV's at all.

arnt you in the states going to the states?
if so get both, they retail for alittle less than 700USD and you get the 4.7 and dualcase.
It comes to around 1400 australian and considering you can bring it back on the plane with you i think the choice is easy, or keep the 4.7 and sell the dualcase or visversa.

Its is not cheaper at all.

You need to purchase the T/case adaptor
A second T/case
Shorten rear drive shaft and balance
Lengthen front drive shaft
Modify or replace T/case cross member
Lengthen Speedo cable
Cut hole in floor for 2nd little gear leaver
find and fit rubber boot to keep water from entering cabin thru this new hole etc etc.

Dont worry about 4th low being to slow with the Rockhoppers,it is taller than 1st high range. So there is an overlap of ratios.
Keep it simple
Everyone i have spoke to that has done just aset of Rockhopers in a stock case has regreted it because you run out of gears in wet or mudy conditions.Having an overlap between high and low ratio does you no good once you are moving.There is no way you will shift from low 4th gear to high 1st or 2nd without damaging gears.

SHITE, Its gone from em asking a question to bringing stuff back from the states. I will be back over there end of next year if I need to get stuff.
I would love dual cases although I aint in the market for them for starters, and secondly I know nothing about them (whats needed to fit them, how to fit them etc) Cant find any write up on installs etc...
If someone could explain this, and the benfits of buying one in the USA feel free too.

Tonka for what you have now you would only want a second case with stock gears which with 4.88 diffs you would end up with 99.6:1
Curently you have 43.7:1 that is both in first gear.
With 33 or 35 inch tyres the 99.6:1 will be just fine.

and if its diesel u will need exhaust mods as the standard one comes across the truk bhind the tansfer and with 2 it will need 2 b moved back further
ATM i need 2 do 4 a dual case mod
1200 - adapter
300 - 400 - 2nd case
300 - new crossmember
?? - bucket seats (mine only has 1 bucket and a 3/4 seat)
250 - 300 - exhaust
250 - per shaft for lengthenin and shortenin
wear as i can get a 4.8 rockhopper installed 4 $1200 and i will do the other mods over a period of time and get duals later if i need them

Ok i just bought another top shifting case for $80
Adapter can be bought for less then $1000 if you realy want one.
My rear shaft cost me $80 to be extended and balanced(i removed the centre bearing)
Front shaft would have been the same price but as i only use it offroad i did this one myself.
Exhast only needs to have about 3 foot replaced on a deisel so if you pay more than $80 you are getting ripped off.
If you use an AA adapter then you will need a longer Speedo Cable in your model which will cost around $75.In gen3 rigs you just extend the wires on the electronic speedo models.
Gearbox crossmember can be moded to suit.
And fitting it is easy and you need no special tools.
My opinion but for the little extra $$ you are getting a much better set up.
Also you happen to break a lower gear set you are up for around the $1200 dollar mark again where as the dual case adapter is not going to brake but if you do a stock case you will be looking at around the $80-$150 mark again.
So what is the best adpater to get?

Tonka Just go the duals - exhaust on a diesel a brane new 2in press bent exhaust can be had for $165 from end of headers back
