Diesel fuel pump guru needed.

Post by ausyota »

Im in need of some quick advice.
I have bought a Hilux with a 2.8 in a non running state that Im am trying to fix up and sell to fund my other Lux project.
It seemed to be getting air in the fuel so I bypassed the entire fuel lines, filter and tank by running a jerry can full of fuel though a hose gravity fed direct into the fuel pump.
We managed to fire up the bastard, after mucking around with the glow plugs, but we noticed something.
The fuel seems to be going straight though the pump with the engine not running and, I presume running down the return line to the fuel tank.
I have a bit of clear hose fitted as the fuel line from the jerry and you can pour diesel into it and within 20 seconds or so it has emptied through.
I take it this isnt normal?
If it is a problem whats involved in fixing it? A full pump rebuild?
I am trying to get out of this as cheap as I can so I can make a good profit on the sale.
Cheers
Paul.

Sounds fine to me. In normal operation the lift pump has to draw fuel up, therefore, it cant just flow through the fuel return line.

Put the jerry can down around fuel tank height, and see what happens. This will let you test your lift pump aswell.

Sweet.
Be good if thats all it is.
One thing to tick off list.
Still have to sort glow plugs and maybe a possible head gasket. Need to look into that a bit further yet.

Im just stoked that we actually got it running tonight and we know that the motors not completely farked.
I picked it up for $850 plus a set of rusty standard zook rims :D .
It is an 88 model dual cab that has been fitted with a 2.8 and 5 speed.
Has new starter, alt (that has been rewound for extra amps), water pump, radiator, recently recond gear box, extractors, perfect panels no rust apart from a couple of little spots of surface rust, no dents, good tyres, rego.
I reckon I should be able to get 4Gs for it pretty easy if I can get it running sweet.

I don't exactly understand what your meaning, myself.

I take your holding the jerry can up in the air?

And run a pipe to the pump from jerry can but don't have the return pipe going back into the jerry can?

When you turn on the glow plugs it's priming the fuel lines and injectors with fuel ready to go.

But you run out of fuel and have fuel returning to the fuel tank in the car?

That's what your meaning right?

on a diesel the fuel lines are in a loop, with a big main pump for getting the PSI up so the diesel can be injected into the cylinder high presure is needed so the diesel can be forced in due to the high compression of the air, then after that the unsed diesel return to the fuel tank ready to go around again.

They only use up a little squirt of diesel to get the pistions going, glow plugs simply help the diesel to start burning in the cylinders for starting up.

if that's any help?
