two owner classic vehicle, if you could find one in similar condition for cheaper i'd be suprised.
Having said that if you where serious in buying it i'm sure you could negotiatew a better price

The hartop doesn't really compare,
It needs its footwells plated, it's unregistered and currently only drives in 2wd. plus minor surface rust and dents.

The soft top is complete and registered, and yes is a collector condition not a cut and weld rig or rock crawler.
which in reality most people on this forum would start ranting with 'buy a sierra, it is easier, more knowledge, more aftmarket more power etc etc' if you said you are thinking of spending a grand or so on a lj80

I couldn't resist the opportunity to put a perspective on this.
As Want33s pointed out, an LJ80 cost less new. And so did a lot of other things...
Waaay back in 1971, I considered buying a new XY Falcon GT 351 'shaker', but opted instead for a 1968 HK Monaro GTS 327 (the very first Monaro) that had 12,000 miles on the clock.
Price of the new Falcon GT was $4800, for a HO Phase III version you were looking at $5200, and I bought the Monaro for $2500.
Today, a mint Phase III shaker can fetch up to $500,000 and a GTS 327 is not far behind it.
Blokes who pay that sort of money for a 30-odd year old musclecar do not do so in order to thrash it but because it is a collectible. As Santos and CWBYUP both pointed out, something like this LJ80 should not be considered for an offroad thrasher but as a collectible.
Do I regret getting rid of the GTS only three years after I bought it? Yes, it was the silliest thing I ever did! For that matter, I wish I still had the '67 MGB I swapped it for, that is worth big $$ now too...

LJ's are getting pretty hard to find now in good condition, and while I am no purist and woudl love to build a 660cc vitara diffed LJ, I do recognise that a clean original car is not what to start with.
Leave the clean cars alone if you want to build a thrasher.
another way of looking at this is that rare cars deserve a really high quality build if you are going to modify the car. I am starting to feel this way about LWB 1.3's. They are geting too rare to just hack up and beat on, they are starting to deserve well considered, legal builds.
In 5 years or so, LWB's will be like hen's teeth.

It's interesting go see how rough some of the cars are the club members are buying and building as it gets harder to find LWB's in decent nick.
As I said I don't want to sound like a wierd beard wearing enthusiast, but building up a car that was heading for the scrap heap, to me, seems fine, but cutting up a clean car seems like a waste unless it is going to be a really clean build.
It'd be cool if we could get Maruti tubs and rails only at a good price to build cars out of then we wouldn't have to worry about "saving" LWB's
