33's or 35's????
33's or 35's????
Hi all
Ive been having a bit of a think about the Mav and Im actually not 100% sure which size tyre to run on it at the moment.
Basically I want it to be 50% Tourer and 50% able to hold its own in the fun stuff. I was going to put 35x12.5 on like my old runner but that become a gutless pig when I did it and used heaps of juice so I dont really want to go down the same path again.
It is currently running the TB42 with the 5 speed and 4.11's.
In around 6 months time Im looking at putting the 351 Clevo in it and possibly 4.625's.
So the question is seeing as though Im getting my tyres soon should I go with 33's and look at upgrading them latter after the mods are done or just go the 35's from the start and put up with it?
Id be very interested in hearing from anyone with 35 plus on there trucks and how they perform and did it go much worse after the change.
Its a hard one for me to pick. I want my 35's again but I dont want the dramas I had before. I dont want much do I?

tb42 has the power.
i had extractors and 2.5" straight through exhaust (no muffler ) for a little while. then went to 35" and put a straight through muffler in it to quieten it down, and didnt notice the difference.
this is on a 8" lifted shorty and i could crack the 100km/h in under 14 seconds.
my opnion, go the 35's. as for tread pattern im not too sure on a 50/50 tire. maybe a muddy or a better all terrain for the milege and noise.

Thanx mate. I should have been a bit more thorugh in my first post. It will be getting Mickey T Claws one way or the other. Im just wondering about the sizing affecting the overall performance. It is currently running 265/70 16's and just about pulls wheelstands.
I spose 35's wont make too much difference. It is a povo pack that came factory fitted with 7.50 splitties so that translates to about a 33" from factory.

I have 35's on a Mav, TB42 Manual with LPG. Did all my 4WDing on LPG and mate i never looked back, i sat on 110/120K's on the F3 freeway, on hills i slowed down to 90K's on the Gas, on petrol i sat on 100K's in 4th no problems. TB42 is a power house,
Though i don't regret the diesel, its good, just needs turbo to compensate for the asthmatic affect they have

imo running 35s will prematurely wear things out much faster and running a heavy tyre like a muddy even more so. I'd be keepin the cheese cutters and have play tyres. it will save you money. As for an all rounder i run toyo opats 31s, but my play tyres are swampers. best thing i ever did havin the 2 sets (she looks a bit strange with little tyres on but hey i'm savin money so don't care as i know what she does when its time to get down and dirty).

I run 37 inch mtr's and much as I rarley use 5th gear, I find it still has plenty of power and will light up the rears. Fuel is better but handling is not so good. They are excellent off road tyres weakness is in the mud.
Don't forget that you also need to stop and this is where I find the biggest difference. My brakes are all newly lined disc's but have trouble locking up at full pedal, so your 35's will increase your stopping distance and reduce your braking efficiency compared to the 33s.
That said I would still go the 35's

Thanx all for the replys , but Id like to clarify a couple of things. I was just after peoples opinions on the on road characteristics of the two tyres sizes , not what type of tread to buy. I already know it will be a very aggressive off road tyre.
Secondly the vehicle is not an everyday driver. I have a company vehicle for that , so the tyre noise , premature wear ect is not an issue for me. My main question was how the TB42 would push the 35's along until the transplant happens , which has been answered nicely by a few people. I now know that 35's are going on.

mate I would consider the lift you want to run first, 33s and a 2" lift is a great touring set up on a GQ, that said a well set up 4" and 35s with the gearing looked after etc will be a good comfortable tourer \ daily and will have the clearence and capablitlies for some pretty good tracks

35s got engineered on my GU so i dont see why it couldnt be engineered on a GQ.

I run the metric version of the mickey mtz 33" on my gu auto, made it a slug off the mark so 35" would be worse, but a good tyre. Also ran 33" bf muds on my GQ 5sp and went every where my mates did running 35 -37" tyres. even drove out of a creek bed that a gu with 35" tyres had to winch out of. Same brand tyre, same driving style just lower gearing and weight.
i used to think that claws were good, untill i saw them off road. They are crap in the mud, and pretty average on the rocks. they are ok for dirt roads tho, but thats not what your planning to use them for right? A cheaper option would of been to get the maxxis bighorn, very underated and lesser spoken of tyre. Or you could of gone simex extrme trekker 2's.
