I've just bought a MK Triton 2.8 non turbo with 105000 on the odo. When I start it in the morning it really makes a racket with misfiring and plenty of blue smoke. Is this normal. Once its up and running it's fine. Nights here are now getting frosty. My MU (190,000 k) has no dramas, maybe a puff of blue smoke and it's away.

Also is there any easy way to see if the timing belt has been replaced? I have rung the shop that did the 100,000 service and he can't remember.

They have a timing chain, not a belt....so if they told you they can't remember changing it its cause they didn't and then I would get worried about anything else they may have supposedly done during that service.

The chain has its own auto tensioner so they are normally good for a long time.

Mine runs rough in the mornings as well. Then no probs once heated up.

If its getting cold out your way, throw some chemtec fuel treatment in and that might help a little as they say it has anti freeze type properties to stop the diesel solidifying in the fuel lines due to its wax content going hard and limiting the flow down the line.

Try a different oil for lower temps.

Hope that helped a little. Just stuff I did for myself and it seemed to help a bit, but obviously its not the be all and end all and may not help you.

thanks for the reply tritontray. The timing chain service was stamped in the book being done in Jan 2006 so they may just not be able to remember that far back (I know I can't :oops: )

I use chemtec in my other diesels and my farm gear and it works a treat.

I use Caltex "Delo silver" in all my gear and never had any probs.

Is this engine direct or indirect injection? May explain the noise.

Mate, my triton does the exact same thing and has done so since I have owed it. I've tried additives, new injectors, new glow plugs and had it all checked out- nothing has fixed it. I now don't worry about it, it just one of those things :roll: . I've never had a problem with it otherwise BUT

you can try heating the coils on and off 4 or 5 times before you turn it over- I find I generally get less smoke doing it that way.

Hey Robbo, it sounds like it's the exact opposite to your old 'Cruiser!! :crazyeyes:

Maybe the engine has been installed upside-down :onfire:

Sounds like a glow plug issue to me.My mitzy does the same thing when one or all are on there way out.
