Steering Dampeners

Post by danos »

Had a quick question about the role of a steering dampener. I see that some cars (usually with upgraded suspension) have a heavy duty steering dampener.

What is the role of the steering dampener and what are the benefits of a heavy duty one?

Thanks

A steering dampener dampens shock loads on the steering ie hitting a washout or pothole.
They are not as necesary with modern power steering as they were back in old days of manual steering. With manual steering it was quite common to hear of people breaking thumbs as the wheel whipped around.
I have driven my Lux with and without a dampener and couldnt tell much difference at all.
I have also tried one of those return to centre ones and all it did was make the steering harder. The spring broke on it and I was thinking gee I wonder why my steering feels better? :) so that went in the bin.
