hi
I want to put electric windows in my r31, it's a non electric window model
I've done some searching with little to no help.
I have the electric window regulators and switches. But i dont have the loom cus there far and few, and most pplz dont want to go to the effort of pulling the hole loom out to sell to me. The motors them selves only have 2 wires power and earth (obviously) and switching the polarity for the diffrent directions.
Can you get relays that connect 2 diffrent lots of pins at once?
eg does the work of 2 relays.
To do it with basic relays im looking at 1 for earth up 1 for power up and the same for down so 4 relays per door.
Would this work ?.
Then i would need some thing to cus the power when the motors are at stall, so when the windows go all the way up i dont burn the motors out or melt the wiring right or blow the fuses ?.
Is there an easier way ?, then i have other things like auto up and the master switch.
For the master switch i would just run that off to the relays for each door right?.
any help would be great

possible as a mate did it into his 60 series.
if u got the switches then u should be fine. try wiring up two relays as u want one to be off when the other is on but u also want both to be off as well when not using the switch.

There is a good way of wiring electric windows up using relays.
What you need is two relays per window. However, normal horn or light relays won't do; you need double-throw relays.
It is preferable to use relays than to power the whole shebang through the switch, as with most things. They only cost about a dollar more each than single-throw relays, and are readily available from Jaycar.
I will draw up a diagram for a single window and post it in a sec.

This looks trickier than it is. The way it works is that both sides of the motor are connected to ground when you aren't using the rocker switch and the relays are in the "off" position.
Then when you trip one relay, it switches one side of the motor from -ve to +ve, so the motor runs in one direction. (Tripping the other relay runs it in the other direction.)
This is not the absolute only way of hooking up relays to run electric windows but be cautious if you use a different approach, that it doesn't have a way of failing that causes a serious short circuit (eg if you used two double pole relays and both activated at the same time). The advantage of this circuit is that if by some freaky accident both relays activated at once, the motor would not run because it would be getting +12V on both sides. This is relatively safe.
Funny I just happen to be doing this job.
ps I didn't just draw this whole diagram, I adapted it from a stored file so I am not claiming credit for it!
pps your alternative is to run rocker switches and no relays, but remember you need double-pole rocker switches for this and it's a fair bit of current to put through just a switch.

that makes a hole lot of sence to me i looks a little confusing but i think i get the idea behind it
there is afew of my mates and some other pplz on forums who are doing the exact same thing in exact same car
i will be sure to send credit your way and to the original picture
if i was to so this for say all 4 windows on a master switch
would i just connect all the relays to the one switch in parrallel
eg one side of the rocker switch runs to the same connector on all 4 relays

Yep, that one wire that says "12V ign/acc" (depending on whether you want the windows to work with the keys on acc or only on ign) can be the same power source for all four windows and can go through a single switch to disable them.runnin4life wrote:if i was to so this for say all 4 windows on a master switch

This is an option, I am just not a fan of running big current through a switch with no relay. I converted a previous car to relays because the contacts in the switches kept getting murdered by the window motors. Relays also delivered better power so the windows went faster, believe it or not.mgundle wrote:why dont you you use double contact toggle switches there rated to about 20amps just run six mm cable to it through a circuit breaker
