Starting problem xj 4.0lt

Post by 80rangie »

A quick question. My wife has a 4.0lt auto 97 Jeep if you start it cold and drive for 5 minutes then stop and turn the car off it will not restart. (Same as trying to start in gear, Does nothing) If you drive for 10 minutes stop and turn off it will restart again first try no problems. Any ideas?

I took the jeep to an auto elec who thought the problem may be the inhibitor switch on the auto but wasn't 100% sure. He also said that a new switch was $700  . I looked up the problem on another site and found that I could pull the switch apart and clean it, this will fix the problem some of the time apparently. Well I did this yesterday and so far so good :) No starting problems. Now we just have to see how long it lasts :) Anyway 1 hours work has got to be better than a $700 switch. I earned so much in that hour I took the rest of the day off to celebrate

You mean the Neutral Safetu Switch? - $700 wow that's WAY over priced.

I thought it seemed way to much but didn't end up looking around for a better price as cleaning it seems to have fixed the problem.
