Hey all,
Just contemplating turboing the baby 1litre. got a few ideas in my head just need some small things confirmed/laughed at.
Has anyone you know performed this?
How hard is a 5 speed to fit to the 1 litre with a 1 litre transfer case. custom jackshaft or just another one?
has anyone hooked up a brake booster to the 1L. just trying to think what i would hook the vacuum for the booster upto.
Any input appreciated

Or put in a complete 1.3L and 5 speed. There's a few around for sale at the moment.
With the brake booster - i believe it is engineerable to cut the 1L brake fluid reserviour out of the firewall and replace it with a 1.3L one - that would give you more fluid and be able to run the 1.3 brakes...

Molch - here's some output from a similar discussion recently held on our club site regarding turboing a sierra motor (thanks Steve)

You would need to source a nice small and responsive turbo to
maximise bottom end. A T3 garret is about 5 sizes too big for a
sierra and will be very very inefficient in this application. look
towards a small ball bearing T25 series (about $2K minimum new) then
a new exhaust manifold will need to be fabricated.
It is extrememly difficult to set up a blow through carby properly,
as by design they are a vacuum operated device. Generally, they leak
boost like crazy, and suffer from all manner of flat spots. I don't
think there is any point trying to set up a blow through carb.
Programmable management will allow propper tuning to get around
leaning out and allow ignition control which will eliminate
detonation - figure on at least $1500 for fitting etc, and plenty of
time onthe dyno to get it set up properly, esp in a $WD where there
is a huge rang eof operating conditions
If the motor it is being hung off is not in tip top condition, then
the increase in cylinder pressures with 7 psi of boost will rapidly
accelerate engine failure. figure on a rebuild with decompressed
pistons and some quality rings.
This is before we get into cooling the increased power, intercooling
and the gerzillion other little things needed like an EFI tank and
lines etcetcetc. It would have to be a $6K job to do properly.
I reckon it would be cheaper and a better outcome to fit a nissan
SR20 (naturally aspirated)ala Joey, - thewse are very cheap and
will provide all the power that you need in a vit, being more
powerful than the factory 2.0 litre and even the 2.0 litre V6. tHe
cost overall will be less, and the result far more reliable and
drivable.

hmm i think i will keep researching as people have been running blow through carby setups for years and there is a heap of info other then pistons go boom.

The master cyl and booster, steering shaft & clutch cable on a 1.3 is mounted on a steel pressing that is spot welded to the fire wall, just drill one off and weld it to your 1L fire wall and bobs your uncle, the 1.3 pressing moves the steering shaft across enough to make room for the booster.

I have a T3 bolted to a stock standard 1.3 goes very hard and has been on for over a year now without a problem. but changed to throttle body injection which is bolt on a piss easy to setup with any aftermarker computer, I would not try blow through carby as tbi and manifold was $100 ( bolt on )and computer $200.
I was thinking something a little smaller like a gt17 ( garret turbo off saabs, can be had very cheap) did you make the exhaust manifold up yourself?
other than petrol pump /surge tank/bigger petrol lines/tbi manifold/computer/exhaust manifold/turbo and oil lines/intercooler was there any unnexpected costs?
did you do most of the fabricating yourself? any idea how much everything totalled cost too?
did you rebuild before doing this or was it clapped out 200k motor ?
obviosuly I'm trying to do this on the cheap but as far as i can so long as im patient and dont do anything too dodge i should be able to get it running pretty reliably.
