I was given some Ranchos that I was gunna fit to the rear of my lux
they are off a coil Nissan, I was gunna convert them from pin to eye
but my old Old Man Emus when taken out extend out under pressure
but the Ranchos dont.
Is this because there is a difference between coil and leaf spring shocks,
or is it a difference between brands.

The terms are not very useful since both use oil - viscous oil is forced to move through a narrow passage for the shock to open and close; the viscosity of the oil is what provides the damping effect ie makes it move slowly.
Gas shocks include pressurised gas which is intended to keep the oil from frothing.
Oil shocks are exactly the same but without pressurised gas and theoretically are more prone to frothing up with lots and lots of up and down.
I am not sure whether that is the explanation here but it is a difference between common types of damper (shock absorber.)
Edit: Not very helpful if I don't add that the gas shocks are the ones that open right up on their own, whereas oil shocks basically just sit wherever you leave 'em. Neither is particularly better imho.
Ranchos use a low pressure gas held in foam.
So no even from new they dont extend like cheap gas pressurised shocks do.
They are better than the cheap gas shocks because they compress easily but have stronger valving on extension were as the gas presurised shock usually have a firmer compression stroke. You will be able to feel what Im saying by moving them by hand.
What this means in use is they give you a smoother ride over the rough stuff as the shock compresses easilly as it hits something but then holds on to give control.
