Where do old centipedes go when they die?

Tyres, that is......
I've been hunting for some low tread 35's or 36 x 15's for ages. (low tread sought, due to budget)
There's 1000's of pedes out there, but you rarely see anyone selling with 50% tread or less (usually 80-95%)
Where do they all go? Are they reincarnated as angry pitt bulls or something?
I'm genuinely baffled why I can't find a decent set after 12 months of ebaying and wanted ads

Thats because you don't know how to read the code on the ads -
0% - 50% tread = 80% tread
50%+ = Like new
Actually, I tthink that most people wouldn't advertise tyres when they get below about 50% tread. I know I wouldn't.

Many of the guys that compete will change their near new tyres every so often, generally with minimal wear.
These tyres are often bought by guys that use them as a second set of off road only tyres that don't get a lot of use. Tyres like Simex's usually don't get driven on too often.

I think you're onto something.....so does " 95% tread, $1500" actually mean "9.5% tread, $150.00"
I'm amazed the amount thet are marketed on a tread%-new price ratio....
An 80% tyre isn't worth 80% of what the person paid for them
...or is it?

Yeah, but more should be out there with 20-30% you'd reckon. Thats all I needed and have found Sweet FA

...or is it?
RRP of Simex 35's are $400, 80% = $320
I generally ger $250 per tyre for 80%+ tread simex, and this is usally paid by the weekend warrior who only uses them 6 or 7 times a year, and therefore get 5 + years out of them.
How cheap is cheap? i have ssen a set of 75% 35x15's on rims sell for less than $800 in the past month.....

wouldnt you be better off with a 80-90% set of MT's than a set of bald Pedes?

how and why would you want and need a tyre with only 20% tread? It wouldn't be worth the money to buy, you would have none of the benefits of owning a Simex with only that much tread. Save up and buy a set with more tread and make it worthwhile purchase.

I've got worn out 16 pedes that get me 95% of the places my mates new ones get....it's easy to say 'save up and get new' if thats an option....it isn't for everyone, my friend

I know the feeling.
If your's are that worn, there's a fella on another forum that re-grooved his. Used a router i think? Or maybe a grinder. Its messy, and time consuming, but apparenty pede's have a pretty decent carcass thickness, so you've got a bit of space to play with. Just makes you a bit more prone to punctures.

Yeah, I've thought about that, but the 16's are on backwards (shh) rims at the moment to get enough offset for the defender. I have 15" offset rims waiting in the shed for boots

I would say if your mates with new tires cant get any further than a set of bald tires, then they should save their money and buy AT's cause they wasting their money on new Pedes..
Saving is not an option? Well of course it is. You mean you dont want to wait the time it takes to save for new tires. We have all been there in our lives.
You buy 3 bald sets at $500 a set, theres the price of a new set or a 95% Tread set, and the new ones will still have 60% tread left to go while your 3 sets of shagged ones are now at the tip.
Poor people cant afford cheap things.

i gotta agree with what everyone else says, theres no use buying bald tyres, you'll only get a few runs out of them and then you'll have to replace them again. In the long term its better to buy a set that are like 50% worn cause atleast they'll still have some chop
I was in the same situo, needed/wanted new tyres but couldnt afford to pay it outright. Went to bob janes and got some maxxis muddies at 200 a tyre on 12 months interest free, so far ive only paid $40 for them!
It's like buying a car thats prettymuch dead, yeh sure you'lll save in the short term but you'll have to replace it sooner rather than later

I had 50% as an ideal amount sought. I'd get 5-8 yeays out of them. Getting intrest free is fine on $1000 worth of tyre, Just put new Maxxis on on Monday. Not an option for $2000 in tyres for me, but thanks for the suggestion

Look on the Navrun website at the Silverstone extremes
Cheaper but still an awesome tyre Simex copy...

A lot of us are on a tight 4wheelin budget. I think Bogged is right here and probably didn't mean to sound offensive towards you. Tyres are a massive part of the must-have 4wd arsenal and Simexes, i say, are the best of the best.
But a compromise is a compromise and i'd be more inclined to get a good fresh set of cheaper 33's (like Mongrels for example) untill you can afford the fresh pedes. This is what i did. A fresh set of , then cheap, 33" Sumitomo's took me further than bald simexes ever would. And gave me time to save for my 35" simexes.

If you've been looking for 12 months or more, surely you could have just put away say $30 a week.
You could have had yourself a brand new set of tyres
Or purchased some second handies off ebay and walked away with change...

I don't have a cent of disposable cash other than what I can russle up selling off other shit I don't need. The wife is happy for me to get the on road muds out of the kitty, but any offroad bling I have to find the cash for, which is fair enough, the belt is pretty tight

You blokes who are saying 20-30% simex's are useles, are obviously (insert nasty name of your choice)
They still work and the side lugs are still huge, they're plenty useful in the bush, not like a normal worn out mud, these things still have massive side lugs when bald..................
