Narrowing down a transfer leak.

Hi all,
I have a leak from under my 1L transfer. At least, that is where the oil ends up. I have replaced front, rear and input shaft seals, and it is STILL LEAKING!

The only thing it still can be is opposite where the shift lever comes out near the top of the case. There is a bolt head, with a smooth (brass looking) circular cap above it. Is this some sort of oil seal? Can it come out to have whatever seals inside it replaced? Can i just Silastic around it???

Any help would be appreciated as i am taking it to a mate's place to try to fix it tomorrow, and i am sick of taking the blasted thing out, putting it back in, and finding out that it still leaks!

clean it off with degreaser, then carby clean to get rid of any residue. Go for a short drive, you should find your leak.

Remove the interior rubber boot around your gearstick if you need to for better viewing.

It leaks after normal highway driving, anything.

i have a transfer case that leaks out where the speedo cable goes in.

Check the speedo drive could be a stuffed o ring or the intermediate shaft above the the lever inputs on the front of the case. My S3 case leaks like a sieve mind you it's been welded up a couple of times before I got it, where is bellied out on rocks.

Have you tried looking for leaks with the transfer out of the car , thats the way I found my gearbox leak , are you sure its the transfer , is there oil up arround the middle shaft or only down on the transfer , is the shifter boot in good nick , have you overfilled it , Have you had it apart and have you used a silastic on the seals , was it the right type , did you use a gasket as well , lots of possibilities , I had a leak and I too mucked arround , it was not even the transfer ,it was the gearbox breather which is behind the shifter and a 30-40 degree incline will cause oilto flow out of the gearbox and hit the prop shaft and appear as a leak. Also what sort of drain plug do you have , mine is the 3/8 plug type , these leak and require thread tape if they are overtightened , see how you go , cHeers Paul.

Where did u get the seals from? There are directional seals which are much better than the std crap. If you can find these, speedy sleave the flanges. It is most likely the input flange leaking.

checked it today,
It is indeed the seal on the input shaft. The seal i put on last week could be sold under the label "sieve". (Either that or i did a bad job putting it on... )
Due to other factors i need a new transfer case anyway, so i don't know how much time and expense i will go to in order to fix this one. It is a 1L transfer with a 4wd light on it. Will a 1.3 WT transfer fit easily enough if i drop mine out?

Can i put a 1.3l transfer into it instead of the 1L? Will this effect things adversely? I also have the 1.3L engine and five speed box in there now.

yes they can be swaped over 1ltr to 1.3ltr the gearing in the 1.3ltr isnt as low as the 1ltr so rock crawling is a bit faster-harder.
the only thing you need to do when changing them over is the flanges on the input and outputs of 1l are smaller than 1.3l and will need to be changed.
if you dont have a rattle gun they can be rather stubborn.
