I think if you wanted to save some money it'd turbo your tb42
just that V8's take up so much room patrol's
either rebuild your tb42, or don't worry and just turbo it as is depending on km and what not.
A rebuild would probably set you back anywhere from $1300 DIU to 3000ish for someone else to do it
then convert your carb to MPFI ah-ha more power
then run a Garrett GT3040 or something.
Should all up cost less than your 10g (not by much) and i know people who have run 300ish rwhp on this set up for over 100,000km

go the V8 They don't take up much room only drama is, you will have to change number 8 plug? from under the vehicle you actually need to space the fan forward to bring it into the cowling. Buying and fitting a V8 will cost you about 8 grand if you do most of the work yourself.
There is no "I" in Team, but there are 5 in Individual Brilliance

U need to remove about 3mm from the face of the clutch centre where it slides over the input shaft, it stops the bellhousing from mating up against the block properly, either that or remove it from the housing that the input shaft comes out of(the end of the tube bit) i chose 2 take it from the clutch as didnt want 2 have to make a new gasket for the gearbox housing. This was on a 168 tooth flywheel setup which is bigger than the 153 tooth flywheel. The clutch is deeper on the bigger flywheel, if using the smaller flywheel it may not be an issue.
Second thing is u need to grind a bit off the slave cylinder pushrod so u have some freeplay, its hard up against the clutch if u dont and will will burn the clutch out as i found out
Aircon brkt and powersteering brkts can be adapted to fit the chev, took us about 2 weeks 2 do it in the evenings and that included painting brkts etc and drinking beer watching them dry
Heres sum pics:

So how much power will the 350 give you? I bet for the same money a TB42 turbo will give you more! If it is because you want a V8, then sweet as but if you want cheap reliable HP then the V8 probably won't be the best option. My conversion is serious $ for HP but still plenty of $.
PS The sound of a turboed V8 is something to behold! But maybe I'm biased!!!!!!!!!!

I fitted a brand new vortec 350 (4 bolt ,roller cammed marine engine combo) in my GQ wagon about 18 months ago and it rocks. it makes 240Kw and 430Nm of torque.I tow a 17' caravan with family and it does it no worries.MAkes peak torque from 980 rpm to 3800 with max being around 1850 which is perfect for rock crawling or towing as there is no lag or low spots.
I would add some pics but not sure if i can being my first post etc.
Go the V8 man.
No mate its as it came out of the crate, oh except ive got the aluminium manifold instead of the cast one.BowTieGQ wrote:I got a Vortec too. Any mods done to yours?
mattsluxtruck: I bought my engine complete from fan to flywheel and it cost me around $5K, thats was the 330HP version, you can get a heap of different HP ratings but i think this is the best for everyday driving ,power, torque and economy.
Heres a link for info but dont buy from him hes a tosser.
