Sealed Air Box for Impco 300A 4.2 Ltr GQ
Sealed Air Box for Impco 300A 4.2 Ltr GQ
Ive just made a nice new 3" stainless snorkel for the Mav, but its useless unless i can hook it up to a sealed air box. My current one is an open element type, and would a a bit of work to seal it up.
Anyone have any suggestions for finding or making one of these.
I know you can get them, i have seen pictures of them etc on cars in this and other forums.
Called various wreckers in VIC and SA, none available. Tried various Gas Conversion Centres in the Geelong area, none available.
Is there one i can modify easily?

I was thinking about mine for ages. Wasn’t sure how to put it together.
I decided on using a cheap cooking pot from Kmart and a few parts from Bunnings
Cut the bottom of the pot off at a height of the filter.
Cut a hole in the lid of the pot to use at the base. (I should have used the lid as the top) but it still worked out ok.
Then I used some 3" Gal pipe and connectors for guttering from bunnings.
These pics show this and later I added a 3" 90deg angle and then 50cm of Gal tube to go over the engine and extractors. From there I used purple pig tubing to connect to the snorkel. Don’t forget the silicone.
Cost about $50 in total and a better seal than any I saw for a gas system.

A speed camera would have prevented that!
Nice look. I too have a carby Mav but the gas kit they used has some fairly intrusive bracketting that supports the Impco unit so I would have to be some mods on mine to clear up the area around the unit.EricB wrote:I was thinking about mine for ages. Wasn’t sure how to put it together.

What did you use for sealing the base where you cut in?
Also did this cut down on the intake noise that these carbies make when under acceleration?

No noise when accelerating but does whistle a little as I start it since I put the snorkel on a few weeks ago.
I also had it dyno tuned when I had the Gas put on and made the cover for the carby. My tuner said it worked well and was not too restrictive at all.
My Gas carb has a flat ring\base on the bottom where the air filter sits.
You would normally put the top on it and have the ari filter exposed.
When I cut the hole on the lid I put it on the carbi. Then the air filter on top of it. The new top (base of the pot) then gets screwed on with the gas carby screws and it all good. Then I just run some silicone around the join.
If I did it again I would put the lid of the pot on top to make it easier to get into without moving the pipe work.

HOWD YA GO
JUST wondering how ya went as i need one also
No worries.
Used some of Erics brilliance and used some parts from bunnings.
Got hold of a 3' bit round drain connector, modded my current airbox , sealed it all up, added a band of metal around it. Moulded the circular bit to it, ran plastiflex from the snorlel to the air box.
will get pics if i get a chance
