Cardinal joint rebuild

Anybody else done this?

How much is the bearing in the middle and is it just a ball with needles inside it?

Oh and did you (that have done it) have trouble getting it apart? Man what a Cookie of a job :bad-words: But now that I have pulled one apart it would be much easier if and when I ever have to do it again.

I think this is what was making the BAD clunking I had when in 4x4. I pulled rear shaft out and put front on stands and got the wife to sit in the lux with her foot on the break while it was idealing in 1st low. Every time it went clunk the joint would jump, but it was hard to tell if the noise was from the joint or from the t case. Anyway I`ll soon know when I put it back together and put it back in the lux.

My front shaft makes the same noise at the double cardan, makes the clunk just turning it over by hand.

The only part of my front shaft that isn`t BRAND new is the cardinal, but that is about to change.

My old front spline would move about 10mm side to side or up down which ever way you wanted to push it

Mine would only do it while under load, but it was super loud

Go a square shaft in the front. It's only when it STOPS clunking that you have a problem :D

If I only did crawling then I possibly would, but I am changing a few things on the rig so that it can do winch challenges as well as rocks. Square shaft spinning fast I don`t think so

Agreed. I'll eventually change back to a standard shaft but it's a great temporary solution.

its generallynot the ball that wears rather the centering pin, so usually has to be built up with weld and re-machined then fit new ball and uni's as per std shaft. i did the rear on mine except i used a hard facing rod so next rebuild all you do is through the ball and no machining

<anal mode> can you at least call it by its actual name. it is a Double Cardan Joint. a Cardan Joint is a universal joint. There is no such thing as a "Cardinal Joint" unless you're talking about a Catholic priest smoking a reefer! </anal mode>

PS yes they are the sucks to pull apart.

That would be double Hooke's joint. The joint was invented by Girolamo Cardano in Italy, and first put into practice by Robert Hooke in the UK.
